Revive: Superstar
Tencent, being one of the most wealthy and ambitious internet giants in China, has listed out their astounding expansion plan in entertainment sector back in an exhibition of Nov 2015. They hired Jin Dong immediately after his quick fame in Disguiser and Lang Ya Bang to film the Ghouls, and later assigned the project back to the popular team of Disguiser and Lang Ya Bang. In the same exhibition, they also introduced the new series, Revive: Superstar.
The new drama got me all excited unexpectedly. I read the novel just several days before its premier, and thought that it is not bad at all, though it is not up to my standard of a top notch. The novel is very engaging and has a very positive note somehow. First, it has nothing to do with those sugar daddy craps; second, the novel concentrates on the acting career of the protagonist instead of his relationships. Maybe these are some of the reasons why it attracts Tencent to put it into a web series, besides the factor of a really large fan base for the novel itself.
Unlike some of the web series that I have watched, Revive definitely has a big budget for 16 episodes. They hired well-known actors and actresses for the parts, and they are really handsome and beautiful. At the first glance, I thought the quality is just so-so; however, as the plots progress, the acting and the script show off.
The protagonist, his manager and their boss are all played by eye candies, and each has his own style. Protagonist being an earnest genius in acting with a heart of gold, and his arrogant manager trying to teach him an anti-scam lesson for naïve school boys, while their ambitious boss loses patience with both of them because he is looking at a separate way. Though according to some of viewers, the boss is reacting to jealousy because the manager takes too much interest in the career of the new actor. There are so many intrigues among the main cast, for example, the protagonist has two actress friends. One of them is obsessed with his pre-accident self, not knowing his real identity; the other one being his most treasured friend besides his now-turn-enemy ex-lover.
The whole series glides through BL and ambiguity under the cover of a BG plot, makes me all embarrassed and attracted at the same time.
