Between work and summer times, I barely have time to do much. And the heat is killing me, so please excuse the lame shipper manifesto I've put up tonight. I was sure I had a few days left, but alas, it ain't so. So, for the new challenge, why I ship Richard/Kahlan
I like sci-fi. I like fantasy. So when someone I know recommended I check out a show called “Legend of the Seeker”, I thought “why not?”. The plot I found online sounded nice so I gave it a try. I started watching the pilot and while I expected the usual plotlines, I was pleasantly surprised to discover it seemed to not go into that direction. You know: boy meet girl. Girl needs help. Boy saves girl. They fall in live. Obstacles pop up. It gets “too hard”. They date other people, but get their happy ending by the time the finale rolls around. But Richard and Kahlan are far from that.
From their first meeting, Richard and Kahlan proved me wrong. While he tries to save her the first time he sees her, she rapidly shows him she kick ass and can protect herself. Even better, she’s the one who has been sent to protect him.
They fight side by side. He doesn’t try to coddle her to “protect her” and she does not hide behind him. They respect each other.
Their relationship grows slowly. While feelings are there from the start, things get in their way. Namely, her powers. Usually, that’s where you would see them give up. Here, they fight for it. They decide together that the difficulties are worth it. That their love is worth it. They make the decision together and stand by it. As Richard says, he would rather have her the way she is, then have everything with someone who is not her.
They fight for it and the finale give them (and us) hope for a better future. Of course, they live in a world full of magic, where the impossible can happen. Which mean that while they’re not supposed to give in completely, there are lovely loopholes that give them the opportunity to give in to temptation…
