Requisition me a Bureaucrat Grade 19 to do my paperwork, please.

I'm plugging away at the OCS petition forms (due tomorrow) and having a far more difficult time at it than I probably ought to. It's hard to convince a bureaucracy that they should let me do something when I'm not entirely sure myself that they should let me do it.

Yes, I want to study computer science in Edinburgh. Because I want to go to Edinburgh. No, computer science isn't my major. No, I won't be taking any courses that apply to my major or to anything beyond the total number of credits needed for graduation. Yes, that's the term that I'm supposed to be starting my comps, and maybe it's silly for me to be gone then. No, I don't really know what the academic requirements are or what the prerequisites are for the courses that I want to take, mostly because their site is full of broken links. Which is, you know, really reassuring when you want to take CS at the school. No, I'm not sure that their courses are "comparably rigorous" to Carleton's courses, and I kind of hope that they aren't. I want a break. No, I don't know much about their classes or departments, although I'm starting to realize that they have an internationally-renowned artificial intelligence department, which is exciting. I mean, not that I'm really qualified to take that much in the artifical intelligence department, but still.

I'm sure you wanted to know all that. I needed to be forthright before returning to spouting BS on their form. I haven't had to practice the noble art form of arranging the truth into the most suitable phrases and avoiding the less useful aspects of reality very much since I came to Carleton. Funny, that. I wonder if that is because Carleton is a (relatively) BS-free zone, or simply because I haven't done anything recently that forced me to deal with bureaucracy and forms and administration?

academics, rant, abroad
