IC Information:
Name: Latvia
Fandom: Axis Powers Hetalia
Timeline: 1949, March 29th (directly after Operation Priboi) and will thus ...not feel very well. The last couple of years haven't been very nice and have made him even more timid and scared than usually.
Age: about 800, appears to be 15
Room: 16 A

Appearance:
Young, slim, and particularly fragile for a 15 year old, Latvia is known to shake and cry a lot. If he smiles confidently, he's actually really good looking. However, he rarely ever does. He has violet eyes and short, curly blond hair that varies in colour from light blond to dirty blond depending on the lighting and time of the year. He is quite short, a little less than 5 feet tall. His clothes are usually very tidy and he prefers to wear shades of red and brown.

Abilities: Latvia is a nation. This means that it's extremely hard to kill him, his healing is different from that of a human, and he can cover great distances in short amounts of time. He also has the super special awesome power of attracting the strangest accidents and trouble. He is tied to his land and people, what happens to them will have an impact on him and the other way around.

Personality: Latvia is usually a very kind person, though he has tried to restore his own traditions and decrease the Russian cultural influence lately. He is not happy being dependent and will always struggle to free himself when conquered, but he fails every time because the conquering countries are just too strong. Despite his situation, he works very hard, yet his history has made him very shy, quiet, introverted, timid and almost always nervous and trembling. He gets scared easily and cries, especially when Russia is around. He tends to do and say things that spark negative reactions from people and is often punished for it, and is pushed around by stronger nations a lot.

Like all the Baltic States, he has suffered greatly both from Prussia/the Teutonic knights/Germany's influence and Russia's doings as well. There were also others, but to a lesser extent. His brothers Lithuania and Estonia are the only people he would really trust at this point in his life. They are very close and he will always go to them if he needs to be comforted. They usually share a bed and are also seen as a unified group by others. When Lithuania left Russia's house during the Outsourcing strips, the way Russia treated the two other Baltic nations seemed to be much worse. Even with his family, he feels very lonely and wishes for friends that could help protect him.
Because he is the shortest East European nation and starts to shake and cry very easily, he is often perceived as a child rather than a teenager even though he is the same human age as Korea.

His hobbies include reading romance novels and poetry.

He is a follower, and he can be a great support if someone needs a back-up or even just support in general. He isn't a person that would usually stand up for himself or contradict someone. If he does decide to be brave, it's almost always the wrong time and place. His answers and comments can sometimes be quite strange or random or even things that he is not allowed to say. This gets him into trouble. He will often feel that others are stronger or better off or just luckier than him, and can be quite an envious person.

Lithuania, Estonia and Latvia are not really siblings. Or at least, not like Russia and his sisters or the two Italies. Lithuania and Latvia are in a sense related by culture/language (though that is true as well for the Scandinavians or Poland and Russia) but were on different sides of power Blocs more than once, have belonged to different denominations (as a result), and have different ruling powers. Also, while Lithuania used to be a big, strong nation, Latvia has always been dependent.. Latvia and Estonia, on the other hand, have completely different roots (and, for example, their language is completely different), but they have been owned/shaped by Protestant-Germanic nations, unlike Lithuania.

For a while, Latvia and Estonia lived with Poland and Lithuania. We don't know what their relationship was in this time, but it definitely wasn't that of equals. The nation-tans, however, seem to have bonded in a way that made them something akin to a family. This didn't last forever. Sweden got partial custody of Latvia and Estonia, breaking up the little "family", and Lithuania and Latvia/Estonia went separate ways.

Enter Russia.

Suddenly, our three heroes found themselves stuck in the same house. Here, the term "Baltics" started to form. They were in a similar situation, and the nation-tans at least grew closer beyond what can be called 'shared fate'. At one point, they adopted each other as brothers because that basically is what they became; equals in the same situation. Emphasis on "situation". They started to drift apart more or less the moment they got independent again (both times orz) - which Latvia doesn't like at all. He's close to both Lithuania and Estonia, more so than they are to each other, but lonely otherwise. But he likes being close to them because siblings are "lively and warm" [and am I the only one who feels eerily reminded of Russia?] and they feel like a “really safe thing to have”. Having a rather low self-esteem really doesn't help his clingy side at all, and he has shown streaks of a passive-aggressive behaviour when it comes to relationships.

History: Latvia was first recognized as a nation when the Teutonic Knights, and to a lesser extent Denmark, beat him up in the 12rh/13th century. That pretty much set the tone of his further existence. The also made him become a Christian (later he became Lutheran, but at that time it was Roman Catholic). He was under German rule until the Livonian wars when he became Poland's underling. Life was very nice for him at that time, and he was a very lively and healthy nation.
One day, Finland introduced Sweden to Estonia and also Latvia. It turned out that Sweden wanted the two Baltics to live with him and Finland, and although Poland was not happy about it he gave in after a little while. For a long time, Latvia lived with his middle brother and Finland in Swedens house. He fought in Sweden's wars and, together with Estonia, worked very hard to support the larger nation.

Everything changed when Sweden attacked Russia in the Great Northern War and lost. [Latvia was in charge of the supply when Sweden ran his failing attack from 1707 to 1712.] Russia took the two Baltic nations by force, beating them up very badly. In the following centuries, he tried to make the two nations one with him by force. He also taught them a lot of Russian things and forbidding them from using their own languages and customs.

But in 1918, Latvia, along with his brothers, gained independence. That didn't last for long. Russia invaded them and beat them up again. Then Germany promised to free them from Russia but instantly forced them into his house and beat them up. And then Russia beat Germany and made the Baltics come back to his house. They stayed there for about 45 years, working too hard and getting punished for the smallest things, until they managed to successfully leave Russia's house again. They still have to be careful and Russia tries to influence them a lot.
