Who defines normal? Who feels they have the privilege to decide whether or not the life you lead is acceptable? Social norms are controlling our everyday life more and more. There are standards for our dress, our behavior, and all of our actions. We can’t say for sure who sets these criteria, but we all know they exist.
The simple act of clothing your body is not so simple. You have a closet full of clothes to choose from. You can’t wear black shoes if you wear blue, no white after Labor Day, and you definitely can’t wear socks with sandals! We are taught, by the media, and by our peers, that one must follow the guidelines of fashion in order to get anywhere in this world.
I believe it is okay to break this dress code precedent we set. Dress comfortable, dress to express yourself, and throw out these social standards. I’m not saying it’s not right to care about what you wear, but fashion should be a form of expression. The clothes you wear should articulate your thoughts, and your appearance should convey your personality. It’s okay to wear all black, to wear flip-flops in winter, to wear those platform shoes you should have thrown out when the disco fad ended, to wear elastic waistbands, to even wear socks with sandals, if that represents who you are.
I believe in the power of expression and originality. Nobody should be afraid to be themselves. Putting on clothes should not be about satisfying other people by conforming to the prevailing trend. It should be about flaunting your individuality. So, I challenge you to be fearless and make a fashion faux pas in order to express yourself
