1.) What did you do in 2003 that you'd never done before?
Move out. Start paying rent and electric bills. Study Greek. Run a real RPG with actual rules.
2.) Did you keep your New Years' resolutions, and will you make more for next year?
No, but yes.
3.) Did anyone close to you give birth?
My co-worker Randy had a daughter in July, although he didn't actually give birth to her.
4.) Did anyone close to you die?
We weren't particularly close, but my grandfather passed on last month.
5.) What countries did you visit?
None. I've never been out of the US.
6.) What would you like to have in 2004 that you lacked in 2003?
A domain. Steady employment. A better GPA. A computer.
7.) What date from 2003 will remain etched upon your memory, and why?
Don't know. Probably 1 September, since that's when school started again. I tend to date everything by the academic calendar.
8.) What was the biggest achievement of the year?
Latin, again, even though I know I sucked ass at it. And finally getting a place of my own.
9.) What was your biggest failure?
Which one?
10.) Did you suffer illness or injury?
No serious illness. And I may have bashed the hell out of one of my toes, but it's so little that I can't really tell; I didn't have much trouble walking on it. Again, nothing serious.
11.) What was the best thing you bought?
Does the autumn semester in 2003 count?
12.) Whose behavior merited celebration?
Cat's, maybe? She's been so kind to me. And Tara, too. And Alma, forever.
13.) Whose behavior made you appalled and depressed?
My father's and his...his...his poor white wife's.
14.) Where did most of your money go?
Tuition and rent.
15.) What did you get really, really, really excited about?
Latin! And the fall semester! And Terra Incognita!
16.) What song will always remind you of 2003?
"L.A. Woman" by the Doors, for no good reason other than that I've been grooving on it pretty consistently.
17.) Compared to this time last year, are you
a.) happier or sadder?
I wouldn't say "sadder", but probably more complacent. I'm not as generally happy as I was overall in 2002. However, seasonal anger notwithstanding, I'm generally a happy person.
b.) thinner or fatter?
Thinner, definitely. I lost a pants size in the spring and never gained it back. Ain't complaining.
c.) richer or poorer?
At the end of the year, richer. I didn't have to borrow money to make my rent, and I'm okay for rent for the next 2 months, assuming I don't get a job before then.
18.) What do you wish you'd done more of?
Language study. Study in general. Actual academic work instead of fooling about on the computers.
19.) What do you wish you'd done less of?
Sleeping. And eating, and going to the bathroom, and getting bored.
20.) How will you be spending Christmas?
Either at home with my mother, or up to Indy clenching my teeth and trying to suffer my father politely.
21.) Did you fall in love in 2003?
Yes.
22.) How many one-night stands?
None.
23.) What was your favorite TV program?
I don't watch TV.
24.) Do you hate anyone now that you didn't hate this time last year?
No. My loves and hates remain pretty constant.
25.) What was the best book you read?
Hard to say. I don't really remember much of what I read, besides Colleen McCullough--which was good, mind, but probably not "the best".
26.) What was your greatest musical discovery?
The Cocteau Twins. And the Supreme Beings of Leisure. And the Talking Heads.
27.) What did you want and get?
A non-University-owned place to live.
28.) What did you want and not get?
Undying glory, but I suppose I have some time to work on that. I also didn't get a new computer (I got one that's new to me, but not New), nor did I get The Girl.
29.) What was your favorite film of this year?
Master and Commander, probably. I didn't see many films this year.
30.) What did you do on your birthday, and how old were you?
I was 23. I did 8 hours of overtime.
31.) What one thing would have made your year immeasurably more satisfying?
20 extra IQ points and a whole lot of money.
32.) How would you describe your personal fashion concept in 2003?
"Hi, I'm a 17-year-old boy hiding in the body of some college chick."
33.) What kept you sane?
My discipline. Alma.
34.) Which celebrity/public figure did you fancy the most?
L. Cornelius Sulla. Also I wandered into the next room where m0mmy is watching TV and I think I've discovered a rekindling of my fondness for Kate Winslet. They're showing Titanic. Nudity &c.
35.) What political issue stirred you the most?
The whole flap about gay marriage. I mumbled about it for 10 minutes before I settled down to have a cup of tea.
36.) Who did you miss?
Lyd. Tarik. Alma.
37.) Who was the best person you met?
Tara and Cat, hands down.
38.) Tell us a valuable life lesson you learned in 2003.
Look carefully at the historical sources you're using. If I learned nothing else from C388 and C390, it was how to critique sources.
39.) Quote a song lyric that sums up the year.
"Ambition helps her do as she please." --Supreme Beings of Leisure, "Golddigger".
