Llamas with panniers are truly magnificent. They are eminently practical creatures; I'm currently re-reading 1491, which touches on the Inca empire (among other things) and the Spanish complaints that Andean roads were just dreadful. Unlike horses, llamas have no qualms about going up steps.
They will also guard sheep.
I would be a little concerned about people's parents (specifically, my own) reading my journal, too. Maybe she just wants to be sure you're not an axe murderer who picks his nose and eats it?
With regard to llamas wearing monocles, this came immediately to mind. They are, indeed, the most debonair of creatures (though they strike me as being too gentlemanly to complain about your excessively-sweetened tea).
