H was a rotten little kid who did things like drop things on stag beetles to see how long it would take to crack their shells and try to put cicadas into their cast-off shells. He said once of his misspent youth, "I'm sure I'll be VIP in Hell." Being of a slightly more altruistic cast (oh, how the tables turned when we grew up), I almost discovered a mummy and then didn't. (Have I told you that story? I don't remember.)

Cicadas go through a seventeen-year cycle, and when the seventeen years are up and dread Cthulhu calls to them from R'lyeh where he lies dreaming, they descend on southern Indiana like a fucking plague and cast their skins all over EVERYTHING. The only beneficiaries of this behavior are the good people of the Indiana University Department of Biology, who have much to do that summer. Actually, I think the last time the cicadas appeared was the summer I met you, so perhaps it was an omen...?

Of course, I didn't know that a pink seahorse was in my immediate future, nor that by the end of the year I wouldn't know what to do without her. I just knew that that cicada noise got really loud by the time I hit Bloomington, and I also knew that I regretted my choice of footwear when I saw cicada shells all over the goddamn sidewalk once I reached my apartment complex.
