Yeah, you can tell I have "L.A. Woman" stuck in my head again.
Anyway, here's the rundown. We got to Bloomington without incident yesterday, whereupon I made my safety deposit and got my keys. w00t. Then we actually drove out to my apartment, which while totally fucking sweet is also way the hell the fuck out there and I wound up driving back to the landlord's office to get a parking permit. While we were unloading the truck, the heavens opened and a torrential downpour came forth, just as we were getting ready to take my mattress in. This is how we learned that the gutter does not work properly, as rather than diverting the flow of water to the sides, it gushed forth a curtain of water. Ooh, the landlord is so hearing about this.
Upon getting inside, we further learned that the deadbolt does not entirely work. If I'm alone and inside, I'll shoot the bolt, but going out, I'm not going to. I don't know if I can get back in, and I'm pretty sure that smashing a window is against the terms of my lease. Ooh, the landlord is so going to hear about that one!
m0mmy made me crash while she brought everything in. I do not deserve my m0mmy.
So when I got up, we went to Chili's for dinner and then to Staples, that I might have things like pens and notebooks and, most importantly, Post-It notes in cute shapes. And then we got back home. The apartment is nice and clean; it still has that New Place smell, though. Crashed again, was poked awake at 7:15 or thereabouts so that we could return the truck to the rental place. (Thankfully, they let us return it in Bloomington instead of Henderson.) Went to get coffee, stamps, textbooks, phone service, food, and a wastebasket.
Important, should you receive my phone number ever: I DON'T HAVE A LAND LINE ANYMORE. The phone is a cell. On the other hand, it's brand new, as opposed to my old cell for work which was 5 years old (and very hip in its day, I'll have you know).
Textbooks were not as bad as I thought they would be. The only ones that I had to buy new were my Greek books, which is not surprising. Of course, both the Latin texts were sold out, and my C421 books are probably only available at the Fine Arts bookstore (or at the IU bookstore). So we'll see how bad that gets.
Also, I learned some other important lessons, like that it is always better to pay $3.99 for real kielbasa and skimp on the lunchmeat. I'm willing to eat turkey salami, as long as I get the real stuff often enough, but I'd rather have real kielbasa than turkey sausage.
So we finished our unpleasant business, loaded up, and headed back south so that I can get the car, gas it up, and drive it back to Bloomington. I'm glad there's a car for me to use--it would be an hour's walk onto campus, or thereabouts. I still need to get an IU parking permit, but in the meantime I know where the Bloomington municipal lot is and I have quarters.
Nobody get all excited by this. My next communiqué will probably be on 1 September, Zeus willing.
bubbleanamika and
jurhael will probably be receiving things from me in the near future, the former more likely than the latter as my odds of ever having spending money again are pretty long.
All in all, though, I can't complain. I'm driving back north tomorrow, there to run the dishwasher and finish unpacking (and also surreptitiously smuggle samurai manga up north). Now I have to go crash again. Good night.
