I had a strange and sad dream this morning that woke me up. It was about the comics.
I was reading Doonesbury, and BD, the football player and multiple war veteran was the focus of the strip. He had expecations of something (clear in the dream but I didn't retain it when I woke), and he was sorely disappointed.
The next morning I went in the room and the flat screen monitor was turned to the side. It had a blue decal on it with an eagle, etc. It was an announcement that BD had committed suicide. My roommates didn't want to look at it so they faced it away.
I did lose a friend in the Fall under odd circumstances. As I was told of his death, I was told that suicide was suspected, but he was on a phone call which dropped off when he fell. So- we assumed that he had a stroke (or something) and lost his footing. Since then, I ran into his former supervisor, she'd heard he jumped off a bridge. It's hard to contemplate--he was a happy person and full of life.
I assume that this dream was related to the loss of my friend Michael. I don't know if the mystery of his passing will ever be clear.
Also, obviously, I have been reading Doonesbury since the late '60's. The characters are pretty much contemporaries. The original cadre is pretty much there, elderly characters like Lacey Davenport have passed on. A much larger proportion of my friends IRL haven't made it, here we're in our mid-fifties.
