The Bookbinder

Yesterday at the Museum of Modern Art I met for the first time a second cousin from England and his nephew Ralph McCubbin Howell, who now lives in New Zealand along with his girlfriend Hannah. As we roamed the museum we spoke a lot about our families and of course the artwork most of which I didn't really like though I am fond of Van Gogh's Starry Night and my favorite, Henri Rousseau's The Sleeping Gypsy, from when I was a little girl and was often taken to the museum by my parents and would cheerfully walk around with them as long as I could see it with the lovely lion in the background.

Today I met my cousin at his hotel and we walked over to Lincoln Center where his nephew would be performing "The Bookbinder" an utterly wonderful short play he'd written and acted in so skillfully. He's done this about 300 times all over the world and would be doing it further in South Africa and elsewhere. A few years ago he set up a theater company called Trick of the Light in New Zealand with his girlfriend Hannah and they've put together several other plays over the years mostly for young people. I was so glad to see his performance and go out to dinner with them afterward. It brought a bit of joy into what has so far been an infutiating year since Mr Deplorablt became president.
