CHAPTER 2

It was his presence that did it. Yes, it was unexplainable, but it was true. Every time Seishiro was anywhere near her, her stomach knotted in so many ways, that even the top Boy Scout would be envious. Yet… even when he wasn’t within her sight, the fluttery sensation did not leave her.

Yuri was able to get through the beginning of the day just fine… sort of anyway. She didn’t pay attention to her morning classes, which was unsurprising. She took her hourly snack breaks… or attempted to, until around the second hour that someone passed her by. Her food had lowered from her lips and her eyes were glued to the figure… then it happened; her stomach acted up again. She shook her head, trying to snap out of her dreamy state. … Did she just smile?

“Damnit!” growled Yuri, glaring down at her stomach. “It’s all your fault! Stop doing this to me!!” She felt a few weird stares in the halls, but she didn’t care. Frustrated, she shoved the rest of her candy bar in her mouth, and stormed out of the halls.

Yuri stood outside of the school, taking a deep breath; she attempted to calm herself down. She was around the back of the school, where many cemented walkways crossed paths with each other, and patches of grass were scattered across the area, implanted with a variety of colorful flowers and trees. The weather was fair; a few clouds were floating within the light blue sky as the sun beamed lightly through them. A soft wind blew gently at her face, brushing her short black hair. Yuri sighed once more and stretched out her arms.

“I just need to run, that’s all!” declared the girl to herself encouragingly. “Running always helps” She stretched for a brief 10 seconds and she was off; her speed accelerated little by little making it look more like she was sprinting the one 100 meter, than just taking a casual run. Yuri had no trouble running… actually she had no trouble when it came to any physical activity for that matter; she was known for excelling in all types of athletics, anything from soccer to judo, she could do it all. It was probably her athleticism which allowed her to eat so much and gain so little. Yuri continued to keep running, though the pavements weren’t empty, many students still walked these passageways attempting to get from one place to another. But that didn’t slow Yuri or her increasing momentum. Thanks to her quick reflexes, she easily maneuvered past groups of students strolling by without even brushing their shoulders. As she kept running, she started to feel less anxious, and more of herself with each step.

From a distance, she heard her name, and words of scolding…something about not running and disturbing the peace. Yuri briefly turned her head over her shoulder, spotting two adult figures stumbling after her. It was the funny-haired principal and the short vice principal trailing behind from a distance, threatening to expel her. Yuri snickered to herself as she sped up; they weren’t going to be able to catch her. “This day isn’t so bad after all.” she thought to herself with a smile. Yuri glanced up, her eyes shined brightly.

Pumping a fist in the air, she exclaimed, “I love runni-!”

Her words came to a halt as her eyes recognized a recurring figure leaning against a window, reading a book...Seishiro.

And so it returned…her stomach began to twist and turn again, reducing her speed. One foot stepped over the other, causing the rest of her body to fall forward without her reflexes to save her this time.
----
“What’s wrong with me??” groaned Yuri as she crawled on top of a white bench, wincing as she rested her cheek upon the cold smooth wood. So it turns out even running could not but an end to the monstrous stomach ache that plagued her day in and day out. After the horrible fall, she recalled herself scrambling off the floor before he took notice, and clumsily dashed off in search for the farthest bench from where she had fallen. The girl sighed to herself in frustration; she couldn’t believe she just ate the concrete! Of course Yuri wasn’t the most graceful person out there-not like Noriko or Karen-but she hardly ever fell from running! She never fell over from running from her house to school, but she crashes into the ground during a measly jog! What on earth was the matter wither?! She shifted her body, her back now lied against the bench, and she was staring up at the sky. Yuri slowly lifted her head, noticing her electric blue leggings were now tattered below her knees. She reclined her head, facing the sky once again with a grimace. “Baka” she grumbled, placing a hand over her chest. She felt a constant thumping in her chest, and was unsure if it was from the sudden fall or her stomach. Yuri sneered to herself as she placed her arm over her head.

“Okay, so he does have something do to with this…” she thought to herself pensively. She’d admit that, but even till now Yuri didn’t understand. This stomachache wasn’t just different, make her heart tremble, or take away or appetite…but it made her feel so weird. If someone asked her how she felt right now, Yuri would honestly be unable to clearly describe it. It was ever since that time…she’d feel like this, and it got worse ever since. Ever since…

“Nice fall there.”

Yuri suddenly tumbled off the bench and slammed into the concrete once again from the shock. “Oww…” groaned the girl as she gradually lifted herself from the ground, her hand clasped on her head. The fall wasn’t as painful as her previous one…but scraps on her knee ached even more. She crouched over, rubbing her knees, trying to soothe the pain. She felt the presence of a figure near her, who apparently witnessed her wonderful tumble. Her eyes widen slightly. It couldn’t be…

Yuri hoped it wasn’t the person she thought it was or could be. If it was, she was going to run away immediately.

Wait, why should she run away? That would be more embarrassing! And weak! Yuri was not weak at all. She’d just have to look him in the eye and confidently say that she meant to fall on the ground…twice. But…she did run away the first time she fell. Oh, what the hell; she just needed to play it cool… and maybe if she played he cards right, her heart and her stomach wouldn’t act up again.

She had spoken too soon, for the aching surfaced, mocking her slightly with its return. Yuri quickly shot her head up, attempting to pull off a calm grin and placing her hands on her hips “I meant to do…” she paused, the arising stomachache faded away as she eyed the figure in front of her.

“Daijoubu?” he asked, popping the lollipop out of his mouth.
“…Miroku.” stated Yuri quietly. She quickly threw her arms in the air. “Thank god!”
“You looked disappointed for a second there.” Miroku raised an eyebrow.
“Disappointed?” Yuri she asked, letting out a choppy laugh, pointing at him. “Hah! You’re funny! Why would I be disappointed?” She sat back down on the bench carefully, crossing her arms across her chest. Miroku stared at her curiously; taking a seat next to her.
“Must be seeing things then.” he replied casually with a small shrug. She nodded quickly “You probably have.”
“But… I’m sure I did see you fall.”
The girl turned to her friend, who had a serene interest in his eyes. Yuri began to laugh again with that strange uneven tone in it. “Oh! That fall!” she chuckled, slapping her knee and refraining herself from wincing, “My shoelaces were untied!”
“It seemed like you were running for awhile…” he replied with that serene tone in his voice. She glanced at him, ceasing herself from dropping her smile. It was just like Miroku to be observant. But, she felt strangely uneasy despite the fact she was trying remain calm…just like earlier in the Yukan Club room.
“Maji de?” she shrugged quickly. “Guess it got caught at that time”
“Right where Seishiro was by the window, ne?”
Her smile immediately dropped and her stomach ached slightly. Miroku was too observant. She turned to him quickly, with a feign surprised look on her face, wondering in her mind why she was trying to pretend in the first place
“He was there? Really?”
Miroku stared at her quietly with this collected, all-knowing look, filled with a hint of disbelief of her act. She continued to look innocent but that gaze in his eyes didn’t cease. He saw through her, it was Miroku after all.

Eventually, the brightness in Yuri’s eyes faded as she slumped against the bench in defeat. He chuckled to himself confidently.
“You’re so easy to read.” he said with a smile as he placed the lollipop back in his mouth
“Shut up,” she growled. “It was a coincidence, that’s all”
“Stop being stubborn.” replied the light-brown hair boy as he flicked the side of her head. “So what’s really going on with you? Or am I going to have to guess?”
She let out a long sigh, ruffling her hair in frustration. “It’s just ‘cause your dad’s the head of the police force” she hissed, pointing at him. “Otherwise you wouldn’t be good at reading people!” She straightened her posture a little with a frown. She couldn’t tell him, he just wouldn’t understand.

An onigiri was held in front of her suddenly.

“Will that help?” asked Miroku as he waved it in front of her teasingly.
She stared at it quietly, the frown fading slightly. Within less than 10 seconds, she immediately snatched it. “Okay, fine…I’ll talk” said Yuri as she began to munch on the rice ball. “I…have a stomachache”
“How does that have to do with Seishiro?” he asked, staring at her in disbelief. She shook her head immediately. “He has something to do with this stomach ache…” she replied as she continued chewing on her food, feeling more and more comfortable with every bite. Miroku rubbed his chin thoughtfully, looking up at the sky.
“So this stomach ache just came up this morning?” he questioned her inquisitively.
“Not really…” stated Yuri as she finished off her rice ball. She leaned her head back, staring at the blue sky once again. “It started about a week or so…”
in the corner of her eye, she saw Miroku’s ears perk up as he turned to her.
“That’s when you were going to get married, ne?” Yuri slowly nodded, an image of Seishiro formed in her mind; there he was in a suit ready to take over her father’s company… and so the memories started rushing back to her…
