I am disinclined to acquiesce to your request. That means no.

Pirates of the Caribbean is a great movie, of course, but even better when watched on a ship after a week at sea. While I’ve kept myself glued either to the deck or a window view for most of this trip, the thick gray fog that rolled in this morning was enough to drive even me into our cabin for a while, thus with the movie watching. Even so, I couldn’t resist walking the length of Deck 13 first. The most surprisingly exhilarating feeling is that of ice cold wind tearing at you, shoving you around like you’re nothing, dampened by ocean spray and the sound of the foghorn blaring through the soft gray world all around. It’s such a clash of textures, and after I stepped back inside my skin tingled. I always did think I could be happy living a life at sea. It’s too bad we only have one life to live.

The sea has so many moods - somber gray, angry gray, molten silver, burning sunset pink, sparkling exuberantly in blue, and, as was the case this morning right around sunrise, fluid and shimmering like pale blue silk. I’ll sit by a window or out on the deck for hours just to watch the ocean play.

I’ve watched quite a few barges sail by today, which means we’re getting closer to Victoria and civilization. I’m really kind of missing the chilly, remote wonderland of the North. The boat is also rocking quite a bit more than usual, though not for any reason I can discern. It was a sensation that was kind of hard to get used to the first day - so subtle that I kept thinking I must be really tired for my balance to keep wavering so badly. Once I tried to run the jogging track on an angry gray day, and bounced from wall to rail like a pinball. (I kept going, though. Most people probably just assumed I was drunk, which is not an unusual state of being for a cruise ship.)

This afternoon I finally bested Jeremy in Yahtzee. I rolled two Yahtzees, which was ridiculous because all week Jeremy had rolled oodles of them and myself? Not even a scrap of luck. Then there was a moment where I nearly threw the dice overboard because Jeremy rolled two more Yahtzees, which he would of COURSE do on the one round I finally had a good chance of winning. I was so angry…until I rolled two more Yahtzees in a row, bringing my personal total to four and our combined total to six. I’m pretty sure that kind of luck in one round is virtually unheard of.
