This Friday our studio is having a wrap-up (but it shouldn't wrap-up if we were true to the thesis of the studio) for the dictionary.
On Monday, I suggested to my professor that I would make a diagram a day for the rest of the semester, and he nearly passed out. I think I might modify this process to be 1) make a diagram 2) derive a project from the diagram (program, building, etc.) 3) diagram the project 4) use this diagram to derive another project...into a endless loop. This would address the issues of the diagram used to generate ideas and the diagram used to explain an idea. I still need to modify the process.
On the diagram:
Unlike my partner in creating the dictionary of the diagram, my undergraduate education was focused more on the narrative than the diagram. I feel like the diagram was forced upon me the same time computer modeling was forced upon me. I associate the diagram with that type of diagram. Since my professors, were 4-5 years older than us, I was skeptical of them, their methodology, and the diagram. I felt like their diagram was used to mystify rather than explain. I made complex diagrams with this in mind. I was commended for my diagrams, that I could only decode. I think those two professors were more influential than I would have liked them to be. Even if their influence was reactionary. I am much more skeptical of methodology because of them, photo-realistic renderings, etc.
I have to explain these two professors. Both were smart, but I think there was a struggle between being our professor and being our friend because of their age. Both were magnifications of the skinny, hipster, architecture student. One had arms smaller than my starving child arms, and the other was a former runway model. "Sexy," "sex it up," etc. was their advice of choice on superficial issues of your project.
It is sad, but they were pretty dead on. My projects are definitely not sexy, and if it is possible, I think I de-sex my projects.
I hope these diagrams help me with that OR am I being brain-washed by the diagram?
