I have a LaCie ethernet disk mini (v.2) that I've been using as a network storage drive and keeping my music collection on it. Tonight, however, the drive failed to boot up. It's powering up, but it's like the drive has lost its onboard software. I can't see it via ethernet or USB connection, so I can't even retrieve my data. This is somewhat distressing because it stores my 90GB music collection, and no - I don't have a backup of it :(
I'm hoping that LaCie will be able to reflash the onboard software and all will be well, but I read in a couple of places that they'll just reformat the drive and thus I'll lose all my data. I'm in a catch 22 - I could void the warranty, extract the hard drive itself and try to patch it into a computer and salvage the data (providing I can read the disk) but then the whole unit will be useless because it doesn't boot and I'll have voided the warranty. Alternatively, I can send it off to LaCie who might format it and I'll lose the data but I'll have a working drive and be forced to spend the rest of my life trying to rebuild my music collection which includes an awful lot of purchased downloads.
Panicked? I is that.
