The City of Arkadia (first draft)

Apr 30, 2005 18:07

Many thanks to vartan and romulus214 for their help with the translation, and especially to davlev and his brother. They've made many additions that I'll add here soon.

Please tell me if I should write down the episode's script (like the scripts of Ulysses 31 episodes are written down here) and/or link to pictures at appropriate points of the story. Right now, it's only the dialogue.

Rebecca: Matt, wait for me! Matt, please, take me with you! Matt, wait for me!
Matt: You’ve already been told no, Rebecca! And no means no!
Rebecca: Oh, Matt! It’s not fair!
Tape player: (...) Destination: the lake of the old ones. (...) evade the network of waterfalls.
Rebecca: River without stars.--I may be too little for his spledunking club, but not for reading a map.
Matt: Oh, the little pest, (how did she do it)? Don’t move from there, I’m coming! Spelunking is serious, think of (...)
Rebecca: No way, I’m not scared! I want to see the lake, I want to meet the people below!
Matt: Nobody lives underground! Except the marmots! And the bats!
Rebecca: And the carrots!
Matt: Come back! The people below are a legend!
Rebecca: I believe in legends!
Matt: If you’re so smart, get by alone. Little pest...
Rebecca: (...)
Spartakus: Look, who has awakened you?
Matt: Rebecca! Oh, I should never have let her go. Rebecca, come back!
Rebecca: Help! Matt, come, quickly!
Matt: Oh, but how could I have let her go? Rebecca! Rebecca!
Bic and Bac: Do you see what I see?--And do you see what I see?--She’s tehrific!--Let’s see if she’s breathing.--I feel that she’s breathing.--I hear that she’s breathing.--She’s breathing.--I feel better.--Tehrig! Tehrig, Arkana, come look! She’s tehrific! Yes, she’s tehrific!
Arkana: Do you think she’s from the civilization above?
Bic: Without any doubt.
Arkana: But I see neither sun, nor moon, nor stars!
Bac: You think that with the centuries of (...) they must have faded.
Bic and Bac: Logbical!
Rebecca: I knew you existed, people below.
Matt: Rebecca! Rebecca!
Mighty Matt: Look at the big one, she's supergeophysical!
Sleazeappeal: And the little one!
Nasty Max: (...)
Matt: Who are you? But...where do you come from?
Arkana: I’m Arkana, messenger of the city of Arkadia.
Matt: City of Arkadia? Do you mean you’re an extraterrestrial?
Arkana: No. I come from the center of the earth, to look for help from you.
Matt: From the center of the earth?
Arkana: Let me tell you.

Arkana: Everything started with the great cataclysm. The great cataclysm buried one continent after the other. (...) Having taken refuge in the center of the Earth, only a few Arkadians survived. Today Arkadia is an exemplary city, nestled around its strange sun, the Tehra. (...) The Arkadians have completely forgotten the past, because their ancestors had wanted it so. And the civilization above is no more than a legend. Neither Shangor nor Shangora, not even Bic and Bac, the oldest mascot creatures of Arkadia, know where the Tehra comes from.
Rebecca(/Arkana?): What’s the Tehra?
Arkana: An artificial sun, (...) (Nobody knows.) Of the very first Arkadians (...) there is left nothing but a strange metal: the Auracite. (...) today the children are preparing a celebration; the one when each of them will present to the elders, along with the Diogeneses, his first invention, his first masterpiece.
The children: (...?) The triggies!--Have you seen my triggie?--They can do everything.
Diogenes: You should spare Tehrig, he’s very old.
Shangora: Like the Archives, from where he comes out each day?
Diogenes: Or maybe even more so, Shangora.
Shangora: But who has made him?
Diogenes: Nobody knows.
Bic: Tehrig has always been here.
Bac: Like our Tehra.
Bic and Bac: Like us.
Shangora: And before always?
Bic: Before always?
Bac: (...)
Arkana: But the Tehra is sick. Even the elders, who (perform rituals to) the Tehra every day, don't know how to heal it. And if one day the Tehra stopped beating? Who in Arkadia truly dares to think about this?--In the great biblabo, each child (...) plants and minerals (...) under the energy of the seven rainbows, (like their parents before them have taught them).
Shangora: Shangor, are you ready?
Shangor: What will our first masterpiece be?
Shangora: A creature from the civilization above.
Shangor: We are the only living beings, in the center of the earth. You know well that the civilization above has never existed. It's a legend.
Shangora: I believe in legends.
Shangor: The Tehra is weakening, Shangora.
Shangora: Oh, no, not now!--Our Tehra is truly very sick, in the end it's going to explode. What should we do to repair it, heal it? Or to find a plan (in) the software, something? Bic and Bac, search in your memory!
Bic and Bac: (Flashbic!) The Archives!
Shangor: Enter the Archives? But it's impossible, they're taboo, forbidden! The Diogeneses guard them day and night, nobody ever enters!
Bic and Bac: Except Tehrig!

Shangor: I don't understand why it is forbidden to enter these Archives (…)
Shangora: (…?) Surely the triggies don't clean here often.
Bac: Can you use it?
Bic: (Well, of course!)
Shangor: (In the end, the Diogeneses are going to notice us.)
Bac: (...)
The tables of Arkadia: These Archives must never be revealed to our descendants. They must never know that their ancestors once lived on the surface of the earth.
Shangora: The surface of the earth?
The tables of Arkadia: They should forget the great cataclysm (…) made all life impossible. The survivors of our civilization above should be no more than a legend for our children. Only the oblivion of our past will bring them joy. From now on, they may only know one world: that of the new Arkadia, around the sun which we have created for them: around the Tehra. And now the tables of the new Arkadia should lead them.

The children: Come on, come, quickly, they’re all making a creature from the civilization above. They’ve found the model in the Archives.--Were the people above like this? She has feet, like Bic and Bac.--They’ll never believe us.--(Although now they should well do.) We’re all going together to present our masterpiece to the elders.

Shagmir: Why are you all coming together? And where are your other masterpieces?
Shangora: Elders of Arkadia! Shagmir! Loria! Here, the one masterpiece of all of us!
Arkadians: She’s strange!--She’s different from us!--She has feet, like Bic and Bac!
Arkana: Arkadians! Listen to me. I’m different from you, but not from your ancestors.
Loria: We have no ancestors. The civilization above is but a legend.
Shangora: Oh, no! It has really existed!
Loria: We are alone in the center of the earth, until the end of the Tehra.
Shangor: No! Elders of Arkadia! Listen to us, come to the Archives, read the tables of Arkadia!
An Arkadian: To the Archives?
Shangor: We wanted to heal our Tehra.
Arkana: Arkadians, don’t reject your past.
Shagmir: Let’s enter the Archives.
Loria: What for? If the people above truly exist, who should we send to meet them? None of us would survive the voyage.
Arkana: I would. Accept me as your messenger to them.
Shagmir: Arkana is our only hope. Let’s go, read the tables of Arkadia.

Shagmir: The children are right, Tehrig. (How have you arrived here?)
Tehrig: How? (…)
Shagmir: It doesn’t matter. Let’s look at everything again.
The tables of Arkadia: Sea. Desert. Stars. Moon. Cow. Cat. Mammoth. Tehrig.
Shangora: Tehrig, look, you knew how to fly!
Shagmir: Learn each (word), Arkana, prepare to recognize the things of the civilization above.
Arkana: Desert. Sea? Moon…no, stars. Sun. Mammoth! Cow. Ca-/Teh- no, it's...Tehrig.
Bic: Tehrig (…)
Bac: It’s tehrific!
Tehrig: Eh, be quiet, you see well that it’s hard.
Shagmir: Try again, Arkana.
Arkana: Sun--sea. Sun--desert. Sun--Tehra.

Shagmir: Will our rainbows have enough energy for launching Arkana?
Loria: And for her return?

Arkana: Your ancestors exist. I’ll come back with them.
Shangora: Goodbye, Arkana! Come back quickly!
Loria: What will we do without them?
Shagmir: And what would we be without Tehra, without our sun?

Arkana: Until the day our Tehra got sick.
Rebecca: Where does this Tehra come from and who has made it?
Arkana: It’s always been there.
Rebecca: And before always?
Arkana: If only we knew, people above. The Tehra will explode, the earth, our earth is in danger. We need help.
Rebecca: Come, Matt, let’s leave with Arkana!
Matt: No, we must go back up, look for help!
Rebecca: So they’ll quarantine Arkana?! While they check her story, (the Tehra will have time to explode!)
Matt: Wait, let me think. In the center of the earth, the geologic time must not be the same as ours, so…
Rebecca: Come, then, no one will notice we’re gone!
Nasty Max: To all pirates of the sea! Estratardinary!
Rebecca: And if all goes well, we'll be home for supper.
Nasty Max: I need them! I want all of them! Video transmission to the pirates of all the strata! Massmedia! I say, video transmission!
Massmedia: Okay, all right.--Fipirate here. (…) The starless river (…) Massmedia is talking to you, you’re receiving me.
Arkana: And now let’s return to Arkadia. The Tehra’s rays!
Nasty Max: (…)
Spartakus: Arkana! I want to help heal your Tehra! Don’t be afraid! Take hold of the grapnel, quick! Or you’ll be vibro-vacuumed up!
Matt: My turn now.
Spartakus: Don’t look down, Rebecca!
Rebecca: Help!
Tehrig: These exercises are no longer for my age.
Spartakus: Your turn, Arkana!
Arkana: Too late, leave without me! Heal the Tehra!
Spartakus: Are you hurt?
Rebecca: What's your name?
Spartakus: Spartakus.
Matt: Who have attacked us?
Spartakus: The pirates of the lake. They catch everyone who tries to step out of his strata, and sell them as slaves.
Matt and Rebecca: How do you know all this?
Spartakus: I’ve grown up here. I’ve learned everything here. Come, now. Let’s not allow Arkana to become the pirates’ slave.

Spartakus: The brigants of the fjord. They’re joining the pirates of the lake.
Rebecca: But where are they all going?
Spartakus: To their base.

Matt: Let’s go! What are we waiting for here?
Spartakus: We’re waiting for the puddle truants. It’s the only way of catching the pirate ship.
Rebecca: But how?
Spartakus: Come.

Arkana: What are we here for?
Prisoner: To be sold.
Arkana: Sold?
Prisoner: Yes. Exchanged like livestock, merchandise...listen!

Arkana: Come with me.
Prisoner: What for...

Massmedia: A slave has escaped!
Pirate: Alert!
Massmedia: A slave has escaped! A slave has escaped! Alert! Alert!
Rebecca: My poor Tehrig!
Spartakus: Careful! Above all, don't move from here. Arkana! Come!--That way, Tehrig! You can go through the crystal, quick, come on, hurry!
Nasty Max: I'll get you!
Narrator: Children, you who live on the surface of the earth, believe in legends. Descend into the hidden strata, discover forgotten civilizations, cosmic worlds, look for the way leading to Arkadia.
