Yeah, I've been slacking. Sorry 'bout that.
The ever lovely
red_squared asked for me to meta extensively about Sirius' relationships with animals. This is one of my favourite things, although it is a challenge to do so for
red_squared, on account of her being one of the people who encouraged my love of it with her fic (and particularly the delicious side order of Remus being weirdly jealous of the various creatures that like to snuggle up with Sirius - a constant vexation to poor Remus, who can't even admit to it because it's so clearly ridiculous.)
Anyway, Sirius likes animals and animals love Sirius. Crookshanks is the obvious contender for Sirius' animal bff and I adore everything about them. There is nothing Crookshanks won't do for Sirius: he runs Sirius' errands, taking the Owl Order for Harry's Firebolt so Sirius himself can keep a low profile. He makes multiple attempts to fetch Scabbers for Sirius, despite Ron's vociferous resistance. He's even willing to risk his own life for Sirius, jumping onto Sirius' chest when Harry attacks him. A remarkable thing, since cats aren't exactly known for being self-sacrificing. All Sirius has to do is stop and scritch Crookshanks' ears, pointing out what a clever kitty he is, in the midst of all his trying to do murder.
But it's not just cats that Sirius can charm. Hippogriffs are notoriously temperamental, but Buckbeak happily lets Sirius hop on board for a lift without any question of expecting him to bow first. Little Pigwidgeon was apparently very eager for the job of delivering Sirius' mail, and I can just picture the foofy little thing, hopping up on one leg waving his wing and cheeping 'pick me! pick me!' And lets not forgot that there's no indication that birds other than owls usually deliver post - it could be that the brightly coloured tropical birds delivering post to Harry are usual post-bearers in their home countries, but I'd not be surprised at all if this never normally happens, Sirius just talked them into it.
And it's not just a one way street! Sirius loves and appreciates his furred and feathered companions. He understands how important a pet is to a child - it was his idea that Ron could keep Pigwidgeon, on the grounds that 'it's my fault he no longer has a rat'. (This line always cracks me up, btw.) And Sirius takes great care of Buckbeak, even when keeping a hippogriff fed and hidden couldn't have been easy.
I would love it so much if there was more Sirius + animals in MWPP fic especially. There's so much potential for fun and high jinks. Sirius intercepting other students' post by charming their owls. Taking animals into peeing on people he doesn't like. Training nifflers to steal things for him.
