This story surprised me hugely:
Nicolas Sarkozy's centre-right party has put forward legislation that would see women make up half the figures in France's leading boardrooms by 2015, under a bold plan to impose gender equality on the male-dominated business world. I'm not sure what I think of the proposals themselves, and I really don't know anything like enough about French politics or business to put this in any sort of context. It could just be posturing - there's a quote in the article from a woman MP suggesting it's hypocritical for the French government to impose gender quotas on business when it doesn't promote women itself. Still, I find it fascinating that quotas are even being talked about by the centre-right in France now, in contrast to the complete unwillingness of British Conservatives to ever consider positive action.
