I'm sorting through the philosophy books today...

...so to keep myself from falling into a pit of boredome and despair, I will read at least a bit of every book I go through and keep a running list of interesting thoughts (at least to me) here.

"Man born of carnal desire, needs to live and cannot live without setting up himself as the object of his own desire, and since he could not desire himself without desiring all he needs as well, we must say that he loves himself in the first place, and then all the rest for pure self-love." ~The Spirit of Mediaeval Philosophy, 1936

" Supposing we take a situation of a man who wants to go to school and gievs it up because of finding that he has people who are dependent upon him.  Seemingly we have two values over against each other.  The man might think the dependence of others upon him would have to exlude education.  Nevertheless, the person would have to recognize the value of an academic education he is giving up, and such recognition would inevitably show itself in his efforts to independently sdtudy and read.  Because he had finally accepted another value as seemingly more important, he would have a heightened sense of the value of that which he is givingup.  It is just when we give something up that we get the most vivid sense of its value.  The individual's way of life from that l be one in which he would supplement what training he had had by all other methods.  He would not simply give up an education; he would see in what other fashion he could get an education.  That is what we mean when we say we do not simply accept one value over against another; what we do is to define them and try to find a way in which we can recognize all the values involved in the problem."  ~The Philosophy of the Act, 1938

Ok and now I've gotten too distracted to read anymore...yay only 1 more hour until the weekend and wow I'm so dizzy.  The library coffee works wonders.
