Tonight was about tears.

Possibly too many tears, if the sodden shoulder of Bonnie's cardigan was anything to go by. Still, as Elena pointed out, at least Caroline hadn't been wearing mascara. Then they really would have been in trouble. Caroline laughed at that, although her laughter was heavy with the promise of more tears. They all cried that night, but the tears cleansed them, and helped them face the new day with a smile.

Tonight was about laughter.

None of them were quite sure how it had happened, how everything had become so funny. Caroline blamed Elena for smuggling in a bottle of Damon's finest Scotch. (Just the image of his face when he discovered it was missing was enough to send them into hysterics.) Bonnie blamed Caroline for having the filthiest anecdotes in the whole of Mystic Falls. Elena didn't blame anyone, she thought that they were probably laughing because if they didn't they'd start crying again.

Tonight was about the supernatural.

Much as they might have wanted to ignore it, it was part of their lives now. The three little girls who had played with Barbies and rolled down hills until they were breathless and grass-stained were now a witch, a vampire, and a human who was perhaps the most supernatural of them all. And, like it or not, the numerous weapons which werewolves were willing to use to torture vampires were more important than who was taking who to this year's prom.

Tonight was about being human.

Because even if the future was uncertain, they were still teenage girls. Gossip and pillow fights and bad chick flicks still ranked high on the agenda. Just because Caroline now thirsted for human blood didn't mean she couldn't stuff her face with marshmallows and potato chips (and then empty the rest of the candy over Bonnie's head for mimicking her with her cheeks puffed out like a hamster). And when she hid the empty Scotch bottle carefully under the loose floorboard, saying that her mom would kill her if she found it, nobody mentioned what it would really take to inspire that act from the sheriff .

Tonight was about nightmares.

Caroline had always been the one to wake screaming due to the horror movie she'd been too proud to admit she was afraid of. Tonight the horror movie was her own life, but her friends reacted in exactly the same way. They soothed and petted and ran gentle fingers through her hair until the sobs subsided to sniffles and she was able to choke out exactly what she had dreamed of. And they listened, offering sympathy wordlessly because any platitudes could only have sounded empty, and held her until she eventually fell asleep again.

Tonight was about dreams.

It had been an essential part of their slumber parties for as long as they could remember, sharing their dreams and hopes for the future. Why shouldn't they continue the tradition? So Caroline and Bonnie squabbled over who would get to be chief bridesmaid at Elena's wedding until Elena silenced them by saying that she could have two chief bridesmaids if she wanted. All of them refused to voice the unthinkable, that there might never be a wedding. That happily ever after could only truly be forever for Caroline, and that that was more a curse than a blessing.

Tonight was about friendship.

No matter how much had changed for the three of them, one thing had remained the same. The bond between them, forged not of blood (although Caroline suggested a blood-sistership with a quick, self-deprecating smile) but of love, trust, and memories. The bond which meant that, no matter how far they might spiral away from each other, when one of them called the others would respond.
