I am not in support of ANYONE other than Anthony for Liz's boyfriend. He's still ahead of the guy who cheated on her (I suck at keeping track of the extended cast) and the guy who she's currently going to court to press charges against. And *considers* Edgar, but only because of the species difference
( ... )
I like Paul a lot, and there is absolutely no un-fabricated reason why he and Liz shouldn't end up together. Anthony is unforgivable, and Lynn must know from reader response by now.
Danni in Archie was a total geek in spirit, but she was also a bouncy, beaming brunette. She was no Big Ethel.
Actually, the comic page needs more geeky girls, period.
Two words: Safe Havens by Bill Holbrook. Not, unfortunately, anywhere near as widely syndicated as I'd like -- and King Features, I find, is currently charging for archival access, so the link will only get you a somewhat dated cast bio and a week's worth of strips, which will give an awfully limited sense of the strip's evolution.
But it has, in fact, evolved greatly -- when it began, Our Heroes were in kindergarten, where now they've started college. They're the "Other" clique, and they are as wonderfully weird as they come. There are clones, mermaids, star-crossed romances, gene-spliced pets, gene-spliced romances, magic mirrors, politics, and lots more. For some reason, it keeps hovering near the bottom of my newspaper's reader popularity surveys, but it's one of the two or three really original strips running on the two full pages my paper devotes to its comics section.
Yeah, Anthony's ahead of those two guys, no question (though she didn't date Howard, so I wouldn't count him). But Warren didn't do much bad to her other than not being available, and Paul hasn't done anything to her other than not be able to move at the drop of a hat.

Howard was never a boyfriend! Liz turned him down when he asked her out, after which he began stalking her. As for her actual boyfriends, she kept Warren at arm's length, then was aghast when he chose to stay away. And she announced her decision to move back home very abruptly, and after Paul had put in for a transfer to be nearer to Mtig. That's crummy, IMO.
Question, in all seriousness: Why do you like Anthony, and why do you think he's a good match for Liz? Is it just by default, or do you honestly think he has wonderful qualities that Liz could not find anywhere else?
I repeat, as I have said to nearly everyone else who has replied to this comment: I suck at emphesis. I meant that in "Not every theoretically possible character in the strip is worse than Anthony" as in, he ranks ahead of the rapist and the cheater, but still behind every other male who has shown an interest in her.
. . . go reread my comment. My definition of 'theoretically possible' extended to 'single and known to live in the same universe. Howard was listed alongside Edgar. To clarify: Edgar is the dog.

Ethel struck me as being more awkward than outright geeky; and as Dilton tended to be a beaming brunet himself, I think it's a fair match.

But that's because Bill Holbrook's one of the best "real life" newspaper-syndicate strips creators I've ever read.
