House Update: Athena

Now that the summer's almost over, I ought to post at least once more about the back yard. The big yard project, overseen by Andrew, has been trying to kill the lawn. It's solid crabgrass, and we want to destroy it and plant something else. Andrew has been dedicated in his battle against the crabgrass, but I sometimes worry that he's just encouraging it. It grows tall and green and laughs softly at night.

I'm pretty sure the lawn could beat me up.

On the bright side, Andrew got tired of the strange brick patio arrangement in the far corner of the yard, so he tore it up. Which is how we got this:

Yes. A big stack of bricks.

In the newly cleared space, we planted the newest member of our family.

She's an olive tree, and her name is Athena. I also planted a blueberry bush next to Athena, but I don't have a picture of that.

So here I am mulching up Athena's patch. Note the sheets of tarp draped over the lawn in the vain hope of somehow demoralizing it. Underneath, the lawn grows stronger.

We also expanded the vegetable garden to twice its original size.

I planted the new space with zucchini and yellow squash. I'm still waiting for those to mature; meanwhile, I've had the best luck with the tomatoes, cucumbers, and green beans. The beets did okay, but next year I'm putting them where they'll get more sun. And planting more broccoli, because that stuff is good.

As of this past weekend, we've started up another Big Indoor Project. Pictures later. Right now, we're still sweeping up sawdust.
