On Sunday my whole family came down to Galway for the day to visit me because I hadn't and wasn't expecting to have a chance to head home since I started work until maybe the weekend before college starts. The previous day in in work I found out that on Saturday was only the practice air show (which I had to miss because I was working) and that the real thing was on Sunday, so I suggested that we could go to that to pass the day.
Anyway, we went there and the show was on from 1500 to 1800 and it was fabulous. Everyone, and in particular mum, had a great time. To her it was a real family outing. To her and the rest of us, it was also a spectacular show.
The weather was perfect for it, very warm, mostly sunny and a relatively clear sky. A huge crowd numbering well into the hundreds of thousands gathered on Salthill beach and Promenade to look over Galway Bay where the show was on.
Most of the planes, choppers and jets were cool but the star performance that everyone was really looking forward to was the famous British RAF Red Arrows. They were amazing. I particularly enjoyed the part where two planes flew upwards together almost vertically and then suddenly diverged at a point where they started to release red smoke and started to curve away and then back again to meet at a lower point, and a third plane flew through their flight path also strategically exhausting red smoke, and they basically formed the shape of a heart with an arrow through it with smoke in the sky. It was very very impressive.
Anyway on Monday, I slept in till the afternoon got up only to cook breakfast/dinner and watched a movie, Paycheck, on my laptop. Then I went to work at 1500. It was another brilliant sunny day, and so hot that you went inside to cool down. Even in the evening, when there was a cloud cover obscuring the sun, you walk outside expecting it to be cooler and you get a blast of heat.
Work itself was fine. Although Friday and Saturday were busy (I didn't work Sunday), Monday was fairly quiet, like it had been earlier last week and we were out of there by half ten. While walking home, I bumped into Ciarán, Donal, Yolanda and Edel. We went back to Edel's place where we played a game called SPANC which was fun. Also, I won! Yay. Go me! I pretty much always win these kind of games actually. :P
Anyway, after that, it was about 0115 and myself and Ciarán headed home. It was again really warm considering it was the middle of the night, even with a light breeze. Anyway, I wasn't that tired so I said to Ciarán:
Me: I'm actually gonna go for a walk.
He: Are you serious?
Me: Yes.
So I went for a walk to the north of the estate because it was more out of town and quieter and I had never been there before. I guess I just wanted some time and space to do some thinking.
I continued wandering along the main road and then took a few smaller side roads, being kinda adventurous. Until, on my travels, I reched for my mobile phone to check the time and found it not there. I must have dropped it somewhere so, in a slight panic, I turned back to retrace my steps, but to my momentary relief, I saw it, despite the dim lighting, about 10 meters back on the path.
But as I walked back to get it, a rabbit jumbed out from the bushes, picked up my phone with it's mouth and ran off into the long grass. Yes, a rabbit. I couldn't believe it either. I immediately gave chase but the little bugger can be fast. I managed to sort of keep up, but only because it stopped every 30 seconds or so for some reason. It was then that I noticed some sort of gold chain around it's neck and it seemed to stop and wrench it's neck more and more often and because of that I started to gain on it.
But as I got really close, almost within grabbing distance of it, still running as fast as I could, I caught another glance at the chain around it's neck and saw that is was not a necklace but a gold wristwatch.
Anyway, just then, the rabbit darted into a large hole under a tree and with one last huge effort, I leaped trying to catch the rabbit in time but it was no use. It had already disappeared into the hole. However, I thought I could hear it just out of my reach deep within the hole and I found the hole just big enough to crawl into so, desperate to get my phone back, I crawled in slowly and carefully. It always seemed to be just out of reach so I crawled in further and further until I looked for somewhere to rest my supporting hand and found only air, causing me to lose balance and tumble downwards, into the hole. I ended up falling a great distance inside this mini-cave.
It seemed like forever until I hit the ground hard. It took a few seconds before I regained my senses and as I looked around, still slightly dazed and disoriented, I realised that it was all bright around, which was no big deal until I further remembered that it was the middle of the night. And as I looked around I saw a whole new world before my eyes, with colourful trees and animals running around in the grass. And among them, I saw the rabbit with my phone in it's mouth, running over and back frantically.
Just then it stopped to wrench it's head around to... well it appeared like that to me anyway... to look at the watch around it's neck. And then it spat out my phone and spoke:
"I'm late... I'm late...!"
... Ok, that didn't really happen. I actually just went for a walk for half an hour and then went home to bed to type out this journal entry.
Yes, I can't sleep and I'm bored.
Good night.
