I need to write about the Jamie Cullum concert now before it gets displaced by Coldplay tonight (recency effect).
In one word: INCREDIBLE. I have never seen a performer with as much energy as Jamie Cullum. From the time he walked on stage, he was killing it. I'm horrible at these concert synopses, so I'm gonna just talk about the highlights of the evening...
1. LONDON SKIES. Holy mother of all that is Holy. Jamie picked up the guitar for this one, and set it up telling us how he wrote this song because of how much he loves London, and was hoping that by writing a nice song about it he could keep his Brazilian girlfriend in London LOL. So that's why the song has a bit of a Latin-jazz feel to it. Ok, so by the end of the song, it wasn't just a Latin jazz "feel". It was pure Latin!! He put the guitar down, grabbed a drum, and beat the living daylights out of the drum while jumping like a maniac. There was so much energy, he was SO into it...when he finished that set, he fell down on the stage, took a 30 second break, jumped back up, "1-2-3-4"....back to punishing the drums. Brilliant. Love him.
2. Making fun of James Blunt. Love him. The James Blunt concert was last night too, so Jamie was thanking the crowd for coming to see him instead of Blunt (I hate Blunt, but that's another story), and for coming to see him when Coldplay is the next day. Towards the end or the show, I think he was playing "I'm Glad there Is You", he infused parts of Blunt's "You're Beautiful" and Coldplay's "Trouble". AWESOME. Love him.
3. Before he started playing "Frontin'", he put parts of "Golddigger" and Amerie's song (I forget the name of it) at the beginning. Brilliant, love him.
4.His drummer, Sebastian, went nuts. For almost 10 minutes, the guy was drumming, on EVERYTHING on the stage!! He left his drum set, drummed on the percussion, on the bass, on the floor, on the mike stands, on the speakers, on an audience member's head, on the piano. SICK. Love him.
5 HIGH AND DRY. Almost forgot this one. Oh goodness, he covered it so beautifully, it felt so peaceful and just beautiful. He sat down at his piano, started the song slowly and really put soul into it. Then the lights dimmed, and he got the entire audience to sing in a two-part harmony. It was just unreal.
6.THE WIND CRIES MARY. LOL...he pretended he was drunk, drinking his beer while just saying "Mary"...then he went nuts and started beating the crap out of the piano, using the piano stool, his feet, his elbows, his backside...crazy. Love him.
Those are the main highlights that I can think of. He jumped like a maniac during the bridge of "I Could Have Danced All Night", did his usual stomp-on-the-piano for "I Get A Kick Out Of You" and for "Get Your Way".
His infusion of all different kinds of music into his jazz is what makes Jamie's music so special, and the raw energy that he effuses with his tiny body is what makes his concerts better than all other concerts I go to. I will follow Jamie for the rest of his life LOL.
*edit*
I forgot to talk about the part where he left the stage, and walked around the concert hall with his saxophone player. Silence in the hall - except for Jamie's voice (sans microphone at some parts) and the saxophone. Freakin awesome. I love him LOL.
Ok, now that that's done, Coldplay tonight LOL.
