Weekend Walk-through...

May 10, 2009 21:05

All in all, not a bad weekend, even working on Saturday.  Work was busy and went by quickly.  Saturday night I went to see Wolverine with a friend - very enjoyable movie, even if the snippet after the credits was a bit disappointing. Rumour has it they may be making a second part to this movie and I hope they do. Any movie with Hugh Jackman is good as far as I'm concerned, doesn't hurt to see him shirtless either, or naked... ;-)

Today was a bit surprising for me. I went over to Mom's as I usually do, taking my laundry with me. I wanted to get a load started before we took her out for breakfast for Mother's Day.  I was somewhat surprised to see my brother's work trailer parked across the road from her house (he does home renos).  Seems that my brothers finally decided to build in mom's dishwasher for Mother's Day. They apparently started this project around 8:30 in the morning - oh happy neighbours (hehe). Sorry, I don't have a whole lot of sympathy for the people who have the other half of my mom's semi... When I was living there, they often did projects of some sort with a lot of banging. They just chose to do these things around 9 or 10 at night and it was rather annoying when you were trying to sleep because you had to get up early for work the next day.  A little payback is fine by me.

All was going well, until the younger of my two brothers had the nail gun and went to place a nail. All previously placed nails having gone off without a hitch we weren't really expecting anything. Then my other brother swore loudly and covered his eye with his hand. No, it wasn't a joke. Mom freaked a bit and promptly left the room because she didn't want to see the injury. It seems the nail hit the wood at an angle and ricocheted off, then hit my oldest brother in the cheekbone just below his eye, continued across his upper eyelid and up his forehead. He was extremely lucky it was at the outer edge of his eye and didn't actually hit the eye itself. It's also good that these nails are not pointed or it may have been another story. In any case, he had to go sit down and recover from the pain and shock. He tends to get nauseous and light headed when he's injured. I took him an ice pack wrapped in a towel to put on his eye, hoping to keep the swelling down and a glass of cold water when he asked for it. Mom recovered herself enough to glance at the injury when he came back upstairs but it still made her feel a bit ill I think.  I commented that Mom no longer takes care of injuries when the children are this old and she said she would have dealt with it if she felt she had to, but since other people were there, she knew it would be taken care of.

The odd things of the day... A very short time before this incident, my mother's boyfriend and I were looking out the kitchen window watching the boys use the table saw and I mentioned that they really should be using safety goggles... go figure.  Then, when my brother was reloading some tools into his work trailer, my oldest brother made a comment to us that this incident could be considered payback for the time when my brothers were younger and the oldest hit the younger in the head near the eye with a golf club on his back swing.  At breakfast, the younger of my two brothers commented that it was payback for just that.  I swear there is no way he could have heard our earlier conversation...

Mom enjoyed the breakfast and the gifts I gave her. So all in all, not a bad day.  I can honestly say that by building in the dishwasher my brothers gave Mom more of a gift than I thought they would. In fact, I didn't think they'd do anything beyond going to breakfast with us. Mom didn't realize at the time but the younger of my two brothers also paid for everyone's breakfast. I mentioned this to her later, saying I could consider him paying for my breakfast today as a late bday gift since he never got me anything for that. It doesn't really bother me that he doesn't get gifts, really, I've known him long enough to know better. The only time he gets gifts for birthdays and such is when he has a gf or wife who basically keeps on top of such matters. As for the older of my brothers, he rarely has money to spend on such things.  When/if he does, he's usually quite generous, perhaps too generous.  When he mentioned it the other day, apologizing about not getting me anything, I told him that Mom needs the money more - have I mentioned he's nearly $3000 behind in his portion of rent and bills?  I'm not going to get into that right now.

Anyway, that's my weekend wrap-up.
