Creationism

Look, I have a confession to make. I like creationists. They're wacky. They're loons. They're wackaloons.

It's the same sort of thing that pulls people to sitcoms and traffic accidents, I'm guessin.'

Some of them are very nice people, but they're still wacky. I basically divide creationists into three groups: the liars, the lied to and the stupid (because we can never discount stupid people). There's some overlap, of course; the divisions aren't perfect.

I've made jokes about giving awards to people who just don't seem to get it. Well, I asked myself, why not. So, (at least partly in an attempt to post more often) I'm going to start a more-or-less daily feature called: "The Unclear on the Concept Award." It'll go to people who just can't seem to understand what they're talking about. I'll just bet that a lot of creationists will be getting the award. Just you wait.

The first award goes to Ray Comfort, one of the founders of The Way of the Master. Mr. Comfort has a blog, once called "Comfort Food" but which recently changed it's name to Atheist Central. Mr. Comfort spends a great deal of time displaying his near-complete ignorance of science, logic and possibly theology.

Today's entry: a post about a pig which (having a mutation, birth defects or both) bears (at least in this photo) a vague resemblance to a monkey. Mr. Comfort crows: "After more than 100 years of waiting, we finally have a species-to-species transition. Have I been wrong all these years to say that there are no transitional forms, and that the Bible is right when it says that every animal brings forth 'after its own kind'?"

Mr. Comfort, we have many species-to-species transitions; this is not one of them. This could be a mutation, but I'd guess that exposure to teratogens might be an alternate cause. But that's just a guess.

If some pig did spontaneously give birth to something monkey-like, evolution would be in big trouble. Good thing this is probably holoprosencephaly.

creationism, unclear on the concept
