Mardi Gras and Tornado surfing

Just got home from a 10 day trip to South Texas for a funeral. Everyone else headed back home Saturday but we decided to go down to the coast and catch the last few days of Mardi Gras. We had a great time - I especially loved the Krewe of Barkus parade. It's a spoof on the Krewe of Bacchus, but it's an entire parade of pets (mostly dogs) dressed up in costumes and walking with their owners or riding on floats. One woman had 3 huge poodles: one dyed purple, one dyed gold, and one dyed green (Mardi Gras colors) wearing masks and feathers and jester collars. Even their toenails were painted in glittery colors. My cats would kill be if I tried to do that to them. There was a Year of the Rat float with big cages mounted to the sides with live white rats in tiny jester hats. My favorite was the couple in elaborate pirate costumes. He had a real parrot riding on his shoulder and she had a tiny chihuahua dressed as a parrot riding on hers. Galveston's historic district was roped off for parties and people would just wander, drink in hand, from one store or bar to another all night. I completely lost track of the days and was surprised to wander into a bar on Sunday afternoon and see the SuperBowl about to start. I had no idea it was that time of year already. (Not a big sports fan, me.)

Getting home last night was quite an experience. The flight delayed 2 hours because of possible tornado activity then added more fuel before we left just in case they got diverted. Once in the air it should have been a 1.5 hour flight, but it took 3 hours to get home because we chased all over the country running from tornadoes. Very bumpy flight. I had very little Internet time over the 10 days, but had managed to get to a bar with access and downloaded Ep 3 of Torchwood to my ipod. I watched it twice as we bumped and swayed over the tornadoes.

Looks like there were about 50 tornadoes in the area. One of our students (I work for a university)had her entire home destroyed.
