I hope my friends will forgive me for going an entire month without posting. My belated holiday wishes to you all, with a bit of groveling for forgiveness on the side. To make matters worse, what inspired me to post today is the news of a death. On Christmas itself, Edd Cartier passed away, at the age of 94. I do not expect many of you to know who

It does, and he seems to have had some good recognition from pulp fans during his life as well. It's not a particularly sad passing, as these things go.

I've been reading it... for more than a month, in fact. It's a bit of a tricky thing to wade through. I think I've got a handle on it all, and I've done a fair amount of skimming ahead. I believe I may actually be more than halfway through, what with the plates at the back. It's very interesting, and I did wonder if you were aware it's supposedly set very close to where we live. It would be alarmingly close, if I believed it were true. ;-)
The premise is an interesting one, but it takes a long time to work out exactly what the premise is. I should hope that such a thing would never befall any of us. As near as I can tell the greatest quality that makes these people prey to such a force is a complete lack of honest self-examination. I suspect that people engaged in RP spend so much time examining the motivations and other inner qualities of people that to analyze themselves along with that is simply second nature. Most people I know are too much in tune with themselves to be concerned about a trap of that nature. on the other hand it's interesting to think how the underlying force would manifest itself differently for different people. It's a sort of reflection of psychological landscapes.

It is a bit difficult to wade through at first, but it gets a little easier as it goes along. At least it did for me.

It does a bit, once you start reading the footnotes as their own separate book in a sense. The diversionary fantasy of a bucolic few months on the west coast left me utterly confused for a few minutes. It would be tricky even without the two works running side by side, though.
