The phone rings twice before X can get to it, setting down her bowl of cereal and reaching across the table to pick it up.

"Rose?"

Her response is quick, voice tight and halfway to sharp.

There is an emergency?

[shadowsusannah]

"No, sugar, it's me. Susannah."

"Everything's all right."

"Oh. Hello."

X does not sound disappointed, just quiet.

And then --

"You are okay?"

[shadowsusannah]

"I'm all right," she says. "Are you?"

She was worried about X. Not as much as she was worried about Rose, for a couple of reasons--but she was worried.
