And today's post is brought to you by the letter B

Apr 28, 2006 09:42

This is how it works: Comment on this entry and I will give you a letter. Write ten words beginning with that letter in your journal, including an explanation what the word means to you and why, and then pass out letters to those who want to play along.

The letter B

1. "Big mistake, huge!" is a line I love in Pretty Woman. Have used it (in a different context, sadly!) a number of times myself.

2. Birth - apart from my own, which I don't remember all that clearly *g* have given it to three others beings, and even more muses. Quite a process, which really is only the first step in so many ways. Kind of like the saying 'After every wedding comes a marriage.' Well after every birth comes a life. And it's so with muses. Well, at least for me it is.

3. Boobs - get rather big when you've just done the above! Also seem to be the focus of a great deal of attention.... for some.

4. Beautiful - such a myriad of things are worthy of this description, not the least of which are some of my online friends. *hugs them*

5. Brown - This immediately reminds me of a line from the poem of a wonderful Australian poet, Dorothea Mackellar, that many Aussie kids, and now adults, would remember at least a few lines of...

The love of field and coppice
Of green and shaded lanes,
Of ordered woods and gardens
Is running in your veins.
Strong love of grey-blue distance,
Brown streams and soft, dim skies
I know, but cannot share it,
My love is otherwise.

I love a sunburnt country,
A land of sweeping plains,
Of ragged mountain ranges,
Of droughts and flooding rains.
I love her far horizons,
I love her jewel-sea,
Her beauty and her terror
The wide brown land for me!

The stark white ring-barked forests,
All tragic to the moon,
The sapphire-misted mountains,
The hot gold hush of noon,
Green tangle of the brushes
Where lithe lianas coil,
And orchids deck the tree-tops,
And ferns the warm dark soil.

Core of my heart, my country!
Her pitiless blue sky,
When, sick at heart, around us
We see the cattle die
But then the grey clouds gather,
And we can bless again
The drumming of an army,
The steady soaking rain.

Core of my heart, my country!
Land of the rainbow gold,
For flood and fire and famine
She pays us back threefold.
Over the thirsty paddocks,
Watch, after many days,
The filmy veil of greenness
That thickens as we gaze…

An opal-hearted country,
A wilful, lavish land
All you who have not loved her,
You will not understand
though Earth holds many splendours,
Wherever I may die,
I know to what brown country
My homing thoughts will fly.

6. Bereda - the name of a cattle station in outback Queensland where I went cattle shooting on a TB and brucelosis clearing program held in Australia back in the 80's for the cattle export industry to the USA. Guess brucelosis is another one... but not one I kinda think of immediately!

7. Backstabbers - a singular dearth of those would be a blessing. Pity there are some who just insist on continuing to perpetuate the habit. *twitches and tries to reach around to remove some of the knives*

8. Bottlenose dolphins - one of the amazing family of cetacea. Spent a bit of time studying them down at 'the bay'.

9. Bush - nothing like the Aussie bush, (no, not the US President!) and waking up to the scent of gums, clean air, and a freshly stoked bush campfire. The scent of these, and later the taste of the barbecue, cannot be matched when cooked over a real woodfire in a ring of stones and dirt in the middle of a bunch of tents and swags, out in the bush.

10. Buddies - taught to depend on them when you're diving, and never to go without one. We used to jokingly tell students that the real reason you always dive with a buddy is it halves the chances of you being the one getting bitten by a shark! But really, where would we be without them? Not just in diving, but everywhere. Who's there to pick us up when we've been knocked flat? Who's there to reassure us when our confidence has been shattered? Who's the one who lets you moan, whine, gripe and bitch when you have to, and then gets you moving on? Buddies, best friends, beautiful souls.

*glances back up...* hmm, did ramble a bit, didn't I? Sorry!
