The TARDIS drifted idly, doors hung open to the quietness of space. The Doctor sat at the edge of the doorway, feet swinging in the eternal depths beneath him. Staring off, but not really seeing. Lost in his own mind.

She knew he was hurting. She could feel his pain, see his internal tears. Knew he needed someone to comfort him and wished she could be the one to embrace him. Wished she had arms to wrap around him and the voice to tell him it would all be alright. She knew of course that it would be. Knew that the pain he felt now would eventually fade. Could see the Doctor and his friends in happier days to come. She was a TARDIS. She knew and saw it all.

No, she thought. Not a TARDIS... The TARDIS. The last.

She was the last of her kind as her Doctor was the last of his. They made quite the pair. Both needing the comfort of the other, but neither able to provide it. Not completely. Companionship was the best they could offer.

She hummed, knowing it was all he could hear her say. Hoping her soft melodic whir would be enough to calm him. Wishing she could do more.

Truth was, her heart broke every time his did. Truth was, she wanted a body more than anything so that she could crawl into his embrace, feel his arms wrap around her. She was his and he was hers. Happily so. He would always have her, even after everyone else had left. She would always be there.

Truth was, she loved him. More than a TARDIS had ever loved a Time Lord. If only such truths didn't have to remain wordless.

The Doctor stroked a gentle hand along the door frame and smiled sadly upwards. He understood. Truth was, he loved her too. More than a Time Lord had ever loved a TARDIS.
