"sorry for the mess" - I think that's nice

as for hunter s thompson: (I've already said this a bunch), but I still think he wasn't the suicidin' type, while he supposedly was very much the get-fucked-up-and-play-with-firearms type

See, initially I didn't think Gonzo the suicidin' type, but then I thought about it, and...he was writing sports commentary. I'd probably kill myself if I went from Hunter S. Thompson to sports commentator in my lifetime.

If I read someone's suicide note, and it said "Sorry for the mess," it would totally take the edge off of mopping up his/her brains. Suicide/homicide clean up would probably be one of the worst jobs in the world.

except for the fact that he started out writing sports commentary, and he obviously enjoyed it much more now than when he started

I don't know if you'd been following his columns in the last few years, but the majority of them did not stick strictly to sports in content, though they often used sports to springboard into politics

and when they were about sports, they were usually about his gambling exploits

there is every indication (to me, at least) that his column kept him alive

and I agree with you about the cleaning up part - it would be horrible, especially if you had lost someone close, and I would take a note that said that completely seriously

He started out writing sports commentary?
I had no idea.
That's nuts!

And no, I didn't follow his sports commentary. I don't care much for sports, myself.

that was the great thing about it - whatever sports (betting) thing he was talking about would usually lead into something interesting

Very interesting. I might go play on ESPN's archive sometime.
