Misdirection and Plain Obliviousness

Phoenix is undoubtedly the Mistress of Misdirection. She gave me the transcript of the conversation she had late last night...and even though I talked the whole plot over with her a couple of days ago, I was still confused. Remembered at last, though, which is good because hopefully now I'll remember not to blurt it out.

See, while Phoenix and I are both really smart, articulate, eloquent people, she tends to be...unusually alert. And I am not. In fact, most of the time only half my brain is paying attention to what's going on around me--the other half is usually engaged in writing and revising some bit of a story that will probably never get written down. And so, if people ask me a direct question, or say something that grabs what attention I do have, I tend to blurt without thinking.

So far, I have given away the fate of Anna Karenina ("But doesn't everybody know she kills herself?"), what happens at the end of Part I of Death Note, an extremely important plot point in a fanfiction, and What (Doesn't) Happen To Kakashi. Both times I did so around Phoenix, she hit me. Which is a good reminder, but a little too late.

This all ties in with my being singularly unobservent, which would probably get me killed if I were a ninja. I'd walk past the Demon Brothers' puddle, think "Oh! A puddle! It hasn't rained in a while..." and think no more of it. Possibly I would jump in it, just for kicks, and I wonder what that would have done to the Demon Brothers' plan...
