I have the same Modern American Usage teacher as Ki did last semester.

"Fin”

Definition

(verb) to achieve a goal or to be victorious; to place first in a competition.

(noun) a victory over an opposing force

Use

Fin is used in a very small group of people, specifically within a single online role-playing community known as "Shades of War." The majority of the users are English-speaking females between the ages of 17 and 23. Until recently, its use has been strictly limited to electronic forms of communication (internet chat and livejournal posts specifically), but there have been instances in which Shades of War members who are acquainted with one another in person use fin when speaking to one another.

History

The word fin was originally a typo made by one of the members of Shades of War in a community internet chatroom. Instead of writing win, the participant wrote fin. Although it was used initially as a way to playfully tease the participant, the community eventually adopted the word. With few exceptions, fin is always used instead of win.

Examples

(In the following examples, *text* is used online to denote action or state of being)

As a noun: "Chihiro for the fin." (spoken or typed)

As a verb: [Player screen name]: *does not fin*

[Player screen name]: *fins!*

Ramifications

It is extremely unlikely that the use of fin will spread beyond the Shades of War role-playing community, and as such its usage will probably cease if the community disbands. As the community itself has been around for fewer than six months, it remains to be seen if fin will last for the duration of the community's lifespan.

School can be entertaining on occasion.
