Kinsha snippet

There will be more of this eventually, but for now, here's Kinsha when she first decides that maybe Makaze's a guy who might make something of himself and everyone else after all:

She's twelve years old when the war ends, a skinny freckled girl with hair as bright as sand in the sun and a puzzled, slightly lost cast to her deep blue eyes. As long as she can remember the war's been her life, the shinobi band her family, the shifting sands of the desert her home; a calligraphy brush has never felt as familiar to her hand as the steel handle of a kunai. When Makaze-sama gathers the tattered remnants of their band together and announces in a quiet, carrying voice that the Daimyo have signed a treaty, that the war is over, and that every ideal the shinobi of Kaze no Kuni have fought for is suddenly so much dust in the wind, Kinsha feels her throat close up, dry as the wind-scoured bones of the dead scattered across the desert.

"But we are still shinobi," Makaze-sama says, and his voice rises a little. "Whatever treaties the daimyo make, whatever words they put to paper and engrave into stone, they cannot take this from us: we are the children of the desert. We are the spirit of the wind, and we owe loyalty to none but to each other. The years to come will bring sacrifice; they will bring death and pain and grief. But they will also bring strength, and hope, as we strive together to build a freedom for ourselves--a freedom that no one can take from us."

A young boy standing by Kinsha pumps his fist into the air. "Makaze-sama!" he shouts, breaking the silence that swayed on the breeze in the echo of Makaze's words. "Makaze-sama!"

Other voices take up the cry. Kinsha's does not. She rubs her hand over the polished butt of her enormous fan, and slits her eyes against the sun and the wind, and watches the man who will soon become the Shodai Kazekage.

And quietly, determinedly, she makes her own promises in return.

EAGLE or HAWK - your daemon may be some kind of
bird of prey. Yours is a strong spirit, and a
fierce sense of liberty. You cannot be
confined. You may be shrewdly observant, and
like to be aware of everything that goes on
around you. You will fight fiercely for the
things that are most important to you, and you
are definitely a force to be reckoned with.
Still, you are not vicious by nature and would
prefer to be left in peace. You probably value
your solitude very highly - not that you don't
enjoy company, but sometimes you just need to
be alone - otherwise you begin to feel caged in
and confined. You might want to take a drive on
your own, just to feel the road beneath you, or
to sit alone on your balcony, watching the
world go by.
