(Ode) Windup Doll

Mass produced piece of Disney’s history
You forgotten hand-me-down toy
Windup reflection of a child’s memory
Plasticine model of girl-meets-boy

You collection of gears and screws and molding
Noisy automaton given to me
Bent and faded after years in a drawer

For my old friends, you give me a longing
The porn novels and all the people we’d see…
Let’s wind you up so I’ll miss them more.

Throwaway Ode

Surrealist Crusade
Of Hannibal
Richard the Lion
The Apocalypse

Dragging sands
Shifting feet
Porn star emblems
Of martyrs

The rejection of a pagan by the sign of the cross

for in class exercise, we brought in an object we could lend away for a weekend. into the box it went, after writing an ode about our object. so i said goodbye to my little windup Ariel and Prince dancing toy and said hello to Jake Snider's picture, from which the other ode is created.

Ode on the curve of his back

Down from lips and a left at shoulder.
U-turn at hips ('cause it's not any lower).
Spinal dip in a sinusoidal line.

Latissimus dorsi meeting Erector spinae
make a curve of flesh where I wish to lay
to count off hours by the knobs of his spine.

A structure that is no big production:
satin skin hiding anatomical construction;
solid map of sinew, muscle and bone.

Over shoulder and a quick right at spine,
and keep straight on that slow decline
into that curve made for me alone.

for reference:
spinal dip in a sinusoidal line
latissimus dorsi meeting erector spinae
