Valentine's Day Bentos :}

So, I don't have a significant other and that makes Valentine's Day a bit depressing. Actually, I've never had a Valentine's with well, a date. Dad brought me a little box of chocolates, though. Now, before I start going on about that whole dating tragedy that is me, I decided I kinda wanted to do something for Valentine's day and I decided I'd really like it if someone made me a cute lunch.

Except I'm the cute lunch maker in these parts. So, I figured I brighten up someone else's day a bit.

Now, Athena is also not dating at the moment and not only was she not doing anything she also had to go into work at 7pm and work till 7am so I packed her a 'snack lunch' for the hunger that would probably hit before lunch.

One and a half shaped boiled eggs here. Heart shaped egg and heart shaped riceballs with carrots and broccoli for edible garnish. The middle egg with the carrot face is one half of a star. I ate the other half because of urm...technical difficulties. Next time I'm spraying the mold with cooking spray. Turns out I don't hate boiled eggs as much as I thought so I might borrow these from Athena again.

Mixed veggies stir fried with some seasoning and rice vinegar and soy sauce. You can't see it but they're red bell pepper, broccoli, and heart shaped and not heart shaped carrots. The heart is a piece of bell pepper that I used a tiny cutter on. Beside them is meatballs (bought precooked and wonderful for bentos) with a sauce I mixed (ketchup, garlic chili sauce, Worcester sauce, and soy sauce) and rolled them in after they were cooked in the oven and sesame seeds on top.

Rice with sesame seeds, pickled plum furikake, and black sesame seeds. I used the heart cutter and pushed it down in the rice, then sprinkled the seeds/seasoning in. The middle one is the flower cutter from the same set.

Now, Dad's Valentine Bento! Using a sandwich lunch carrier from Tupperware. Rice with furikake and black sesame seeds along with another bell pepper heart. (I messed up on the sesame seed heart that I was trying to make but I think I like the way the pepper heart looks here anyway). I made a big batch of potstickers last week when ground turkey was on sale and I think these actually turned out really well, maybe I'm finally getting it on my third huge batch? I included potstickers because Dad seemed to really like this batch too and added little bottles of soy sauce (a piggy and a fish) plus a few meatballs left over from Athena's lunch. Then for dessert a baby banana, do-si-do girl scout cookie, and grape candy.

I actually made Athena dessert too but for got to take pictures. I used my failed attempts at cream puffs (three failed attempts and counting) and cut them into heart and flower shapes, then mixed chocolate pudding with a bit of almond flavoring dashed in and made a kinda layered pudding dessert with some of the shapes on top.

I really wish my camera hadn't died though, all pics are from my phone so forgive the quality, I'm still looking for a decent cheap camera. (All suggestions welcome).

Hope everyone had a great Valentine's day!

I'm working on soy sauce eggs now (since discovering I may like these boiled egg things again) and there might be a report on that later...

bento, cooking, me
