Hmmm...story tidbit for Pet Shop of Horrors...This came to me while watching "Wild West Tech" [think that's the name...]. Might play with it.
“It’s defiantly broken...” D said nothing as the blacksmith gave him odd looks, the wagon his ‘Amazing Animal Act’ called home had hit a rock on the dirt road. “I can fix it, but it’ll take a day or two...”
“Very well...” D put a piece of gold on the counter. “Please accept my payment now, then, I will return to check on the progress in a few hours...” The silk covered exotic Chinese man fanned himself lightly as he stepped into the hot and dusty streets. These places were usually simply a minor inconvenience and place to perform when he deemed it needed. Still, a few hours here, thanks to overpaying one ungrateful human, would be worth it. He really needed to make the wagon less...vulnerable in the future.
“Dummy!” A small blonde boy lunged almost into him, chased by cruel voices. “It’s just a cat!” “Give it back!” D caught the boy, meeting teary blue eyes. Cuddled to his chest was a half-dead kitten. The other boys stopped, obviously intimidated by the strange man.
“Are you all right?” He murmured to the child in his arms.
“He don’t talk mister.” One boy volunteered. “He’s dumb.”
“Not even if you hit him...” Another agreed.
“Really...” A low drawl said, accompanied by the heavy thuds of boots. A tall blonde man dressed in worn heavy clothes and a brown hat hanging from a string behind his head. His tan face accented the paleness of his hair and two Colt 45s hung on his lean hips. “Chris, ya ok?”
/”They were killing it!”/ The voice curling through his head startled D. /”It screamed Leon...It screamed...”/ The man knelt as the boy spoke, taking the poor kitten. His rough large hands handled the small furry body with a care the Chinese man would have thought impossible.
“It’s shook up, but it’ll be ok, Chris. You hold it we’ll find a place for it...” He stood again, turning towards the children. “Go on, ‘m sure ya’ll can find someplace else to be...” They lost no time in disappearing.
“Sorry if we’ve caused you any trouble,” The man said, taking Chris’ shoulder. “I appreciate what you did for my brother.”
“No, no trouble at all...I am awaiting my wagon and was doing nothing as it was...” D replied, eyes on the unusual blonde child. “I could examine the kitten if you like, I run a traveling animal act and know quite a bit about them...”
“We’d appreciate that, Mister...”
“D, I’m called Count D...”
