So, a few weeks ago, I drove
mentia999 to Tufts Animal Hospital to pick up her cat, Bagheera (he's fine, just a little radioactive from his thyroid treatment). On the ride out, the conversation turned to cars and driving and
mentia999 explained that she and her husband had decided they didn't need two cars and were planning to sell one of theirs. Later that evening, they called me with an offer to sell the car to me (at a price that passes by 'reasonable' and almost dips into 'makes me feel guilty'**).
shogunhb and I talked it over for and finally decided that we should buy it so that I have a car of my own. Juggling commutes while I worked for Fidelity or as a sub had been a bit tricky, and while
shogunhb is very very good of letting me take the car for whenever I need it, there is a fair bit of scrambling around and advanced scheduling that needs to happen when I do require the car. Having a car of my own will put a stop to all that, at least until one of them ends up in the shop.
As for the car itself, it's a silver Honda Civic from 2002 and it's in excellent shape. The engine was replaced in '06 (when they bought the car. The engine was cracked and they new they could get the car for cheap and then replace the engine) and it runs very smoothly. It's also spotless and in excellent condition; they kept every record possible of tune-ups, mechanic visits, and everything else. There are a few things that I will have to adjust to after driving the Subaru around for past four years or so: it doesn't have anti-lock brakes, isn't 4-wheel drive, and the lights don't turn off automatically with the car.
As I have already discovered. To my chagrin (but not to the point of needing a jump, yay!).
I'm hoping to convince
SHOGUNHB to swap cars with me in the winter, since he is a better driver than I am and has far more experience driving in the snow, but until then, I am quite thrilled with my new, sporty little silver car. I need to figure out a name and put some identifying markers on my car (because, you know, it's a SILVER HONDA CIVIC, IE, THE MOST COMMON CAR KNOWN TO MAN) but I love it already. Knowing I can just hop into the car and drive somewhere, anywhere, is kind of exciting.
It's not fully mine, yet, of course. I handed a check over this weekend and we put the car on our insurance yesterday, but the insurance documents haven't arrived yet. Once they do, I can take the car to be inspected and then registered. Hopefully, this'll all be done by Friday at the lasted.
Until then, though, I'll be content with trying to figure out a name. Any suggestions?
*New to me, anyway.
**However, we also agreed on some extensive amounts of future cat-sitting, so I don't feel guilty about the monetary portion of the sale.
