I went ot my friend Steve's oral defense this afternoon. I'm so glad I did--it very much cut down on my anxiety. It was Ginger, Sun Hee, and Jay (all professors) and they basically carried on a discussion with Steve about his thesis. There were even snacks! It wasn't a rapid-fire interrogation, just a relaxed conversation between peers. Okay, Steve wasn't relaxed, of course, but he was as close to at ease as is possible under those circumstances. Then they kicked us out for about five minutes, then came out and congratulated Steve on successfully defending his thesis.
Then Ginger invited me up to her office and gave me a
Nuance bag; inside was a poster from David Tennant's run of Hamlet. She saw it in London (lucky!) and thought of me, cause she knows how much I love Doctor Who. She was incredibly impressed: "I cried at the end--I've never done that before. It was so cathartic. It was kind of like an orgasm--you don't know what one is until you've had one."
Awesome does not even begin to describe this woman.
She also confirmed that I'll be her TA this semester for the Capstone (the big project for all senior English majors--sorta like an MQP). One of the texts we'll be studying is Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are Dead. I think I'll volunteer to show that at some point this semester. This may be the text I teach as well--I'll have to talk to her about that.
Got my evaluations from last semester. Some of the better ones include "
shadowravyn=awesome" and "Was glorious. Added glory to more glory. Approving bear gives his seal of approval." That's Micah's. He's so adorable. I'm actually kind of glad I won't be his TA this year, so I can start inviting him, Josh, and Julie to parties.
