The Concubine’s Son- Chapter 1
Rating: PG-13
Length: Chaptered [1/10?]
Author: shadowofmyday
Beta: [info]jaceni
Pairing: JaeMin, slight HoSu (I’ve already had someone miss it...)
Summary: Han Jaejun was the youngest son of the Sultan. His kingdom was a war, but had been offered a treaty. As part of the treaty, the heir to the Sultan would have to marry the other kingdom’s princess. The problem here being, that despite Jaejun not knowing about it, he was the only son of the Sultan. But there was no way he was marrying ‘Her royal highness, Princess Park Bom’. No way.

Jaejoong was willing to try anything to get out of this marriage. Despite his vanity, Jaejoong had completely ignored his own personal hygiene for two days straight in protest of the marriage before he finally snapped and took a very long bath, brushing his teeth for twenty minutes and brushing his hair free of any knots for about three hours... Just to be sure. He'd the tried to starve himself for four days, including the time he wasn’t bathing, but then he woke up with the palace doctor and a very unimpressed Sultan standing next to his bed, Jaejoong had been sure the last place he had been in was the garden, and he'd finally realised that that plan had been a failure before it was even fulfilled.
That left Jaejoong with one relatively sane option (since suicide was hardly sane, now was it?)- running away. Never returning again. Or at least not for another month.
And so it was discovered that Jaejoong, a horse and three hundred thousand won were missing five days after the boy was informed of his arranged marriage.

Changmin was disappointed.
Again.
It seemed that he couldn’t have been more wrong about Jaejoong- instead of doing everything he could to protect the kingdom, it seemed that the Prince was doing everything he could to ensure that the kingdom fell.
It infuriated Changmin.
The Prince had started by going two days without bathing, presumably to make himself not presentable, and four days without eating only to faint in the middle of the garden... meaning that one of the guards had to carry him back to his room before facing the wrath of the Sultan, who had believed it was the guard’s fault, until the doctor arrived and said that Jaejoong had fainted because he hadn’t been eating and pointed out the stash of plates of food in the corner of the room.
When the Prince had woken up, he at least had the decency to look guilty under the accusatory glare of the Sultan, but something told Changmin that this was not going to be the Prince’s last effort in protesting against his betrothal. No, Changmin could see that behind those ‘guilty’ eyes, another bigger, more dastardly plan was being formed. And Changmin didn’t like that idea at all.
Changmin was not surprised when Jaejoong was announced missing the next day. After all, he knew that the Prince had been planning something. What Changmin was surprised by, however, was how calm the Sultan seemed. The man hadn’t yet offered a reward for someone bringing Jaejoong safe and sound, instead just said for any of the troops that were still out patrolling the kingdom to keep an eye out for Jaejoong and to bring him straight to the palace if they saw him.
Changmin had thought that, given the current importance of the situation, the Sultan would have issued a reward the moment he heard of his son’s ‘disappearance’, but then, Changmin supposed that the Sultan wouldn’t want to alert the other kingdom of the fact that the Prince had run away. And surely the Prince couldn’t have gotten that far away yet, right? Even if he had taken one of the fastest horses the palace owned.
However, after three days, the Sultan’s patience seemed to have run out as he offered a reward of 120,000,000 won for the Prince to be brought back. Of course, his disappearance still isn’t announced to the general public- he knew how easily word would get to the other kingdom of the Prince’s disappearance and so he only allowed the palace guards to try to bring the Prince.
And really, it wasn’t an offer that Changmin could refuse.
If he had that kind of money, he could move back to his hometown. Be with his family. Changmin couldn’t hold back a smile at just the thought of being with his family again. And so he made a vow to find Kim Jaejoong and reap the reward, even if he had to drag the Prince back to the palace by his ankles.

Changmin sets off the next day on the fastest horse he knew of. He had food, enough for a few days, and all his savings from the past few years to buy more with. He wasn’t entirely sure where to start looking, so just sets off in a random direction, hoping against hope that he would find that Prince- if not for the fact that he would be able to go home, then for the pride he would have knowing he’d been the one to bring the Prince back and save his people.
After a day of almost non-stop riding, Changmin finally decided it was time to rest for the night lest his horse collapse the next day. He’d seen many people throughout the day, but all of them either had no idea what Jaejoong looked like or they hadn’t seen him;though Changmin suspected that judging by the whispering of mothers to children, that Jaejoong had somehow bribed the townspeople to keep his secret. Changmin couldn’t help but admire the Prince’s cunning- the Prince must have actually accounted for bribery within the amount of money he took. Changmin certainly didn’t think he would be able to think so quickly about such a matter if he was under pressure, and he’d always been the one to get the highest grades in all his classes in school back home. Changmin sighed, oh how he missed the warmth that was always abundant in his hometown- though most of the citizens were poor, and had probably only became poorer due to the raging war. They always seemed cheery. Maybe it was the constant sunshine the town always seemed to have.
As Changmin ate in front of his fire, he began to hear footsteps around him and the whispering of what he supposed were the curious children that lived in the town he was resting in.
His suspicions were confirmed when he heard a small voice whisper, “Sir, what have you come here for?”
“To find my Prince.” He answered simply.
“Your lover?” The voice asked.
“No, the Prince. Jaejoong.”
“I didn’t know we had a Prince Jaejoong.”
“He’s a well kept secret, I guess.” Changmin chuckled, “Come, sit down.”
The boy walked towards him and in the glow of the flames, Changmin could see that he was probably from the poorer of the town’s families. “Will you tell me a story, mister?” The boy questioned as he sat down.
“What do you want to hear?” Changmin could feel a connection with this boy, like a brother. Maybe it was because they were both from poor families.
“Tell me about the palace. About bravery. What is it like to be a guard?”
“It’s not all it’s made up to be. I haven’t fought dragons, duelled great swordsmen nor have I captured the hearts of any Princesses.” Changmin chuckled.
“Then tell me about this Prince you seek.”
“The Prince?” Changmin paused and waited for the boy to nod, “He’s beautiful. Like no man you would see- the face of a woman some servants say. His personality is nothing of the sort, however. He is incredibly stubborn, and always a perfectionist. He is vain like no one I’ve ever met. I think the longest I’ve seen him be away from his reflection is five minutes. He is incredibly cold towards everyone, acting like we’re all only there to serve him, which we are in a way, but I think he acts more like we’re slaves than servants. The Sultan doesn’t notice this, though. Or at least, not as much as us. Jaejoong is the Sultan’s only son, and, as such, is his heir. But the Prince is rarely treated like an heir. In fact, he was raised thinking that he had an older brother- a lie, obviously. Jaejoong was only told that he didn’t have a brother a week ago. He was also told that he was betrothed to Princess Bom, from the other kingdom. He ran away three days ago and the Sultan has offered a reward of 120,000,000 won to any palace guard that is able to bring him back. I really would like that reward- it would mean I could return to my family, but I’m not sure where to look.” Changmin added the last sentence in the hopes of guilt tripping the young boy.
“…There was a strange man that came through this town the day before yesterday. He went east.” The boy said, looking around before running away- thinking he would get in trouble for sharing such a secret.
A moment later, Changmin could hear cries of ‘Taemin, what are you doing out of bed?’ and smiled. Taemin. Thank you. He thought before lying down and eventually drifting off to sleep.
