She watches him out of the corner of her eye while he sleeps; her open face telegraphing her every thought. Her obvious interest distresses her brother; they fight in whispers during this same sleep where she watches him.

It is from those moments that he knows she won’t push him away the day he corners her outside a small gas station just inside the Texas border (miles and miles from where another lucky girl never died). He touches her hip and cheek and brushes dirt from her forehead before her brother’s stiff voice breaks them apart.

She blushes, mutters a soft apology, but her brother simply glares, and he only allows the small smile to slip past when the twins have headed off to the car; their argument caught in the midday heat.

Two nights later they have stopped at a rest stop in southern Pennsylvania and her brother sleeps fitfully in the car as he stares up at the wet Appalachian sky. She finds her way to his side, wrapped in the coat three sizes too big he lifted off the owner of the last car he stole.

“I am sorry for my brother. He just wants to protect me.”

He shrugs; the air is getting colder - the farther they go north the stronger the distant ticking in his head seems to grow, but try as he might, he knows he could not take her power or his. “It’s all right. I understand, he’s afraid. I used to be so afraid, but I’ve found peace. I hope your brother finds it - I hope you do as well; what you can do, that makes you special.”

“Special? A curse, maybe, but special no. I kill people, Gabriel. Don’t you see? What I can do? It is no gift, not from God.”

He turns to watch her face, so sad and lonely in the pale moonlight. He can feel her power thrumming under her skin - a pulse of death just waiting to be unleashed. “Don’t say that. Don’t hate yourself for what you are. The world can be afraid of you, Maya, but don’t be afraid of yourself. You’ll never be able to live with your power if you are.”

“How do you know so much? How can you know that I am safe?”

He cups her cold cheeks in his hands; she looks so small in the brown coat, so young with her lost eyes staring into his. “I told you… they have hunted me for things I never meant to do.”

She sags just slightly against him; her breath steams the air between them. She feels so good (her power so strong like this, his heartbeat nearly matching time with its deadly pulse). “Gabriel…”

“Shh…” He presses his lips to hers, slowly at first, but more firmly and stronger as she pushes back and the lure of her power drags him deeper.

When she breaks the kiss (her head burrowing into the hollow of his neck), he takes three long breaths before the sudden urge to tighten the hand around her neck, gently stroking her hair, ceases.

“Gabriel?”

“Yes, love?” The words slip past his lips as easy as the murders in the past; it is easiest to lie about the truth.

Her breath hitches and flutters against his neck, disrupting the even pattern of her power’s pull on him. “We never tell Alejandro of this. He would not approve.”

“Whatever you like. I just want to keep you safe.”

“Mi ángel.”

“For always.” For now, she needs never to know that they’re a matched set of lies and deceit. He is her angel, Gabriel, and his heart is as dark as his purpose - black with murder and death.

Feedback is love!
