Golden light washed across the polished floor like spilt champagne. The glass windows were scrubbed till they shone. Everything was just as it had been left yet there was something missing.

An eerie silence hung about the house, a house that should have been filled with laughter, with the sounds of children racing about. The soft tread of someone walking broke the silence, the stillness as I stepped into the parlor.

Clutched in one hand was a slip of paper. It was a page that destroyed everything and yet gave me the freedom to be who I needed to be for you. I stopped my heart heavy within my chest, a deep pain of sorrow breaking me.

“I’m here.” I whisper as I stand there watching what was my world crumbling around my shoulders. A spotless house, decorated for the social standings we found ourselves in but it’s empty. There is no warmth, no welcome for me now. “I kept my promise.”

From upstairs the faint but distinct sound of sobbing reaches me and I drop my head. I’ve come home to you…but I can’t be with you. I’m no more than a drop of sunlight in your world, a tear that you’ve shed. I should never have left you my love, never let my pride call me to fight for a cause that was so much smaller than us.

Oh Darlin’ how I wish I could change things, I could be with you again. But I’m always going to watch over you, I’ll always do what I can to make sure you’re happy! It’s a promise I know I can keep…even from the grave.
