somebody wrote me about how i'm not posting pics of my trip.
whoops. so here are some, i guess long overdue, and obviously,
well, owed.
this is the day after the first interview in NYC. W left me the
key to his apartment, just in case i caught cabin fever and needed to
take a walk around. after a jaunty wave to the Italian doorman who said
"take a jacket, maginaw!" i was on my way.
Passed by
St. Paul the Apostle Church to say hello, and took some pics.
it really is great to find pockets of quiet in the city where one can pause and gather your wits together.
baptismal font and pool
detail, pool floor
experimenting with lighting and stuff...
i just went where my feet took me, pausing at thrift stores that sold old books and turntable records...
... and taking pictures of the odd streetcorner or two.
i was sort of scared to bring out my camera even if i was on the Upper
West Side, lest i became too tourist-y and looked like a mugging
target. but it was too crisp and nice out, so i tried to be a
shutterbug as much as possible.
wandering around without seeking anything out, i found
Nancy's Wines for Food, which was featured on Queer Eye a season back.
i got to meet nancy, who was kind enough to teach me about good
rieslings
and other white wine to pair with food. what i liked about this
shop was it was a small, intimate, unassuming place, with no pretension
and lots of helpful people who are enthusiastic about the trade.
made a mental note to come back and hopefully get to purchase a bottle
or two.
made off to buy some provisions at
Gristede's
and intended to head back to Columbus Circle, where W's apartment was
nearby, but directionally challenged me suddenly couldn't remember
where i was coming from. Walked up the street, wondering why i was
getting more stares from people in cars as i passed by. it was
when i reached the end of the streetcorner that i realized i was in
Central Park West, where walking is anathema to the affluent residents
there. from there i had to walk 15 blocks to Columbus Circle...
... which i safely reached.
Note to self: Never get lost in Central Park West wearing 3-inch boots. even with storebought arch support.
i went in Time Warner Center just to get my bearings and massage my sore feet. doing so placed me just in time for the
holiday light show they had at the main lobby... where their christmas star light fixtures change color in time to the music.
... pretty, pretty stars. all wallpaper-worthy.
too bad i wasn't able to walk around Central Park, as it was
getting quite dark. i'll save it for my next trip. resisting the
urge to go to Williams-Sonoma and Borders, i went back to W's apartment
to rest. i just took this from his window while watching Oprah...
well, more soon, i hope. see you all.
