A Thought for the Day (yes, another rambling rant)

Sep 11, 2009 12:20

Ok, I have to say how much I dislike the media, but as much as I dislike them, I am bemused by them.
Today is 9/11. Every damn news channel is carrying something about the event. My only consolation in this is: at least they have stopped talking about Michael Jackson for the day. THANK HEAVENS! But really, replacing crappy news with crappy news that's eight years old? Come on people! Will MJ get the same coverage on the anniversary of his death?
UGH!
A death is a death. We mourn, we move on. But our morbid obsession with constantly reminding ourselves of the darkside of life has got to stop (especially when its only U.S.'s lives that we seem to be twitterpatting about).
We've let the Oklahoma bombing fade from memory, now it's time to do the same for New York. If not, then I say we apply the same standard across the board. We'd better have Hiroshima Day and Nagasaki Day (they lost more lives in each of those cities then we did on 9/11).
We've become a society the publicly beats its breasts and weeps. Almost like professionaly mourners.
I'm not saying what happened was not a sad event. But there have been sad events since then. There will be sadder events in the future. But if we dwell on these events, we will fail to see the better times.
It's time to move on. I know you can't really put a time limit on mourning, but 8 years seems a bit ridiculous, at least to me. The news can stop covering it. I don't care. Thank the gods for an off switch.
