From current events to the Los Angeles of Yesteryear

What is up, guys?

Bought me some Kings tickets! In February, I will see the Kings play the Bruins. My ma is excited because the Bruins were her team back before the Kings were created, and we all want to see Patrice Bergeron.

Oga's Cantina at Disneyland's upcoming Galaxy's Edge will serve Star Wars-themed cocktails! Of course, since I seem to have turned into the official family Disneyland trip driver over the years, I probably will only share a libation with someone, but that sounds fun. Also, starting today, the Disneyland app has added mobile ordering for the Tiki Juice Bar! No more waiting in the ever-present long line for Dole Whips!

Rodeo Road in the Baldwin Hills-Crenshaw neighborhood of Los Angeles will officially be renamed Obama Boulevard. I have mixed feelings about this. It makes sense considering the names of several of the east-west running streets in that area (Washington Blvd, Jefferson Blvd), Rodeo Rd just so happens to intersect with Martin Luther King Jr Blvd just east of La Brea, and it's still a predominantly African-American community. But my mom grew up in that neighborhood (my dad grew up in West Adams, the neighborhood just to the north), and I've spent a loooot of time there myself over the years, so it will always be Rodeo to me. Amusingly, Conan O'Brien did a bit around Rodeo Rd for his first Tonight Show. My family just happened to be watching that night, and we found it hilarious because we know those places. Eden Beauty Supply, where Conan got his wig, was less than a minute from my Nana's house. The store is situated diagonally from what is now a Target, but back in the day was a Fedco. Good ole Fedco. I remember when Fedco was looted during the 1992 Los Angeles Riots, and I missed a week of school because the violence surrounded us there. And Fedco pizza, I think I miss you most of all. Anyway, here's the video.

And lastly, this was from a couple years ago, but the facts don't change: You know you grew up in Los Angeles when... Which ones apply to me: 1, 2, 4, 5, 9 (CHALUPA!), 10, 11, 12 (yup, family vacations to Vegas before and after the Strip existed), 13, 14 (the Culver City Ice Rink is now a Harbor Freight, boo), 16 (it took awhile but yup), 18, 19 (I still recite those lines at the end of Laker games), 21 (OMG YES), 24, 25 (scary time), 26 (this hit home because just a few days before I found this post, I saw an old classmate in a commercial), 27, 28 (I can't help but notice this while reading fanfic, and it can really throw me out of a story), 29 (Apple Pan burgers are overrated). The main reason I even stumbled upon that post was because I was looking for information about the LAUSD menu items of yesteryear. Rectangle pizza, chalupas, chicken patties, coffee cake, all that fun stuff. Rectangle pizza was my favorite cafeteria food. There was and still is nothing like it.
