Olympics, Day Whatever

Feb 23, 2010 19:30

The BBC & PBS are remaking Upstairs Downstairs and bringing Sherlock Holmes back to the small screen. I think they should leave Upstairs Downstairs alone, but I am interested to see Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman as Holmes & Watson. I love them both.

Michael Jackson's Captain EO returns to Disneyland! I think my brother and I still have our old Captain EO visors somewhere in the house. They had these fun red blinking lights on them.

I think it's still a little early for Canada to concede the medal race to the U.S. I would not be at all surprised if Germany ended up beating us in the medal count by the end of the Games. I knew surpassing the 34 medals we won in Salt Lake would be unlikely, since that was a home Olympics, but I just wanted us to beat our Torino count of 25, which we did today! I'm also a bit amazed that we've held off Germany for a week and a half. I'm not expecting medals in ladies figure skating because our team is young (I think Mirai Nagasu is adorable, though she got a crappy draw for the short program. Watch out for her in Sochi!), but I am hoping the Night Train, our four-man bobsled team, comes out on top.

The ladies' competition starting tonight should be very interesting. I'm sure the Japanese, Mao Asada with her awful costumes and Miki Ando, are eager to take Kim Yu-Na of South Korea down, but if Kim doesn't fall, that will be unlikely. Go Kim Yu-Na! She's awesome. Poor Joannie Rochette! :'-( So tragic. I don't know how she's going to pull herself together enough to compete, but I think everyone's going to be rooting for her to perform well in her mother's memory.

I don't know why Patrick Chan cares so much about Johnny Weir wearing roses a fan gave him while in the kiss and cry. This is Johnny's last Olympics, and he wasn't disrespecting anyone.

I could barely half-watch the Canada-USA hockey game the other day. It was too suspenseful, and the end result was quite a shocker.

Shani Davis lost the 1500m in speed skating for the second time, but the surprise winner, Mark Tuitert of the Netherlands, was so overjoyed and overcome with emotion after he won, I didn't mind at all. Shani said he is thinking of coming back for the 2014 Games because the 1500 is his favorite race and yet it's continually eluding him. And a big ouch for Sven Kramer, who would have won the gold in the 10,000 had he not followed his coach's incorrect instruction during the lane changeover.

Bode Miller finally won gold, in the super-combined. He's still an odd and crazy person, but I think having a daughter may have grounded him a bit. My poor Aksel Lund Svindal of Norway didn't finish the slalom portion of the super-combined, so missed out on a medal, but as soon as he reached the bottom of the hill, he gave Bode and the other medalists nice hugs. This is why I love you, Aksel! Aksel did come back to win bronze in the giant slalom, so that's good.

WOOOO SILVER MEDAL IN TEAM NORDIC COMBINED!!! We've never medaled in Nordic Combined or team Nordic Combined, so this is an exceptional Olympics for us in these events. The team is full of cutie-patooties, so I'm very happy for their achievement.

Since this got a little long, I'm doing a separate post for ice dancing. Back in a bit.
