Tonight are the Tony Awards! Yay! GO RAUL ESPARZA!!!! He lost last year to David Hyde Pierce, booooo (okay, I like DHP, but I just like Raúl better). ;-)
Also this year Bobby Cannavale is nominated, as are Rufus Sewell, S. Apatha Merkerson, Laurence Fishburne and Patrick Stewart.
Anyway, this year, I'm rooting for In the Heights to win all the big categories (they're nominated for 13), but since Passing Strange won so many Drama Desk Awards, they might win it all. I've given PS a listen from start to finish, and while I love some of the Hendrix-like electric guitar, on the whole, it's not as easy on my ears as ItH. There are some bits of the songs I like a whole lot, but I wish there were more of those bits. This is just a personal preference, though. ::shrug::
In the Heights, on the other hands, mixes salsa music with hip-hop, and it's a lot of fun. Some parts remind me a little bit of RENT, which definitely isn't a bad thing. In fact, Lin-Manuel Miranda, who created and co-stars in the show, was inspired early on by RENT. Wikipedia sums the premise up nicely: The story explores three days in the characters' lives in the New York City Latino neighborhood of Washington Heights.
Anyway, Lin-Manuel Miranda is awesome. He actually has a YouTube account as
usnavi, the name of his character in In the Heights. The real gem on this account is LMM performing his own version of High School Musical 2's "Bet On It." He does all the Zac Efron dance moves (and looks cooler doing it) and also adds some of his own rap to the song. And here it is:

The early awards just wrapped up and Michael Cerveris and Julie White hosted. Michael is looking great as always, and Julie looks glam! Julie White, btw, played Judy Witwicky in Transformers. She won a Tony last year, too. :-) The regular awards start at 8 E/T, so tune in! The original cast of RENT will be there for a RENT tribute, too!
