Sharp eyes take in the way his fingers idly tap out a non-existent beat on the table. She isn’t sure what’s on his mind, but she knows whatever it is can’t be anything good, not with that frown marring his face and that crease of a brow showing otherwise. Yoruichi, for this excursion, has decided to forgo her feline form and has surprisingly settled into the comfort of her original skin, clothes on and ready to take on the world for all intents and purposes. She doesn’t want to make him uncomfortable or she probably would have done without the clothes, but she’s here to cheer him up, not offend him and make him defensive. She could do that sort of thing any old day.
“Hey, heeeey, you doing anything, Ryuu?”
He’s startled out of his internal diatribe (and she has a feeling it’s a boring, long-winded diatribe at that) and looks up with a vaguely surprised but trying so very hard to hide it expression. “And what exactly are you doing here?”
“Weeeell, Urahara’s sent your little boy out to fight a big boy’s war, thought you might need to talk to someone!” she cheerfully suggests, undeterred even as he narrows his eyes - appearing put out by the mere suggestion he needs cheering up.
“I’m fine. Now, don’t you have a mouse you need to be exterminating or something?” He brushes off her concern, which wouldn’t have stung so much if she hadn’t honestly been trying to help.
“You’re just scared,” she interjects before he could go on (and oh did he look like he could go on for hours when it came to insulting someone), cocking an eyebrow at him in an all too knowing manner. “You’re scared he’s not going to come back, is what I think. You’re scared that he’s actually going to die.”
“And what would a shinigami like you … know about real death?” It’s a mutter, not meant for her to hear, but she hears it anyway.
“More than you could possibly imagine,” teases Yoruichi in a dry, scathing way, not anything like her playful demeanor of before. “He’s not going to die,” she admits a minute or two later. “If he’s anything like you … he’s too stubborn to die that easily.”
It’s as Ryuuken starts to turn his head away from her with a ‘hmph’ of dismal that she catches a brief flash of a smile.

Gamma likes to say that he doesn't fear anything. He likes to say -- to Angelle (to make her feel less frightened for him while he's away), to Nazna (to show her up), to Elwood (to impress him, to make himself look perfect and strong) -- that he isn't even afraid of death. That death is just another adventure, it's another journey he'll one day have to take.
But Gamma's eye is on the prize, not to raise the dead. Not to just reach his goal, just to say he was able to do it.
Gamma wants immortality. He doesn't want to live forever, not really. But Gamma's so afraid to die (he clenches his artificial fist, swallows the lump in his throat) that he'll do anything to avoid it.
He's afraid of the many circles of hell, and he doesn't want to know what demons lurk behind the tombstone.

Gamma has been through much since he’s joined the Black Spell. Some good, some bad, and some in-between the lines. He doesn’t care, as long as he gets stronger than anyone, becomes what he’s always wanted to be - and finally, someday, he’ll be on top of the world even if he has to kill everyone else to achieve even that. Uni is possibly the biggest hurdle he’ll face. He isn’t scared of the White Spell, it’s his own men, his own organization that truly makes him even a little bit afraid. He copes, though, he’ll always cope. It helps him move on.
But there’s one thing he can’t stand even if he wants to cope with it. Being defeated is that one thing that makes his blood boil. It’s because of those brats that he lost to that Hibari Kouya. And those brats would pay.

"You know," he says quite blithely (and Yako can almost imagine the lightbulb over his head; when Neuro starts off sentences with that kind of expression and tone, she backs away a few feet) "...I believe you've moved up in the ranks, Yako."
"..." Yako stares. "Are you--?" Actually complimenting me, she wants to say, but Neuro cuts her off.
"Yes, I think you're on par with a tapeworm today," he spreads his arms magnanimously.
"But -- last week, you said I was a fruit fly maggot--"
Neuro blinks, frowning. "Oh," he says, a little let down. "I suppose you've regressed then." He pats her head and smiles, speaking in a patronising tone. "Well, evolution is a tricky process, I expect. You'll make it to earthworm level soon enough."
And Yako, glaring daggers at his back when he turns around to search for more mysteries, tries as hard as she can to keep herself from wringing his stupid demon neck.
