Title: Break of Day
Fandom: Bleach
Characters: Kisuke (with hints of Isshin, if you want to take him as the other captain - if not, that’s fine, too~ Purposely left that bit open for interpretation since I was too lazy to add more depth to said person.)
Notes: This is for the second contest over at
exiled_love . And, as many people have pointed out to me lately~ It’s still midnight SOMEWHERE, right? Prompt was “by the morning light” for the April Fool’s Day contest~! Enjoy, etc. etc.

Dawn, that specific time of day, is probably one of the easiest things to describe, but hard to describe, just the same, in the emotions it provokes. Colors are beautiful that time of morning, right as the sun makes its very first appearance during those early hours, casting hues of light and dark and playing artist across the sky. It’s simple, yet lovely in its entirety. Emotions are a bit more complicated to comprehend than those colors, though. They are wild, wholly unrestrained. During the rising sun’s debut, a person could go from feeling at peace one minute to feeling ashamed the very next. Different situations invoke different feelings, but the dawn is probably one of those few constants.

“Lost in thought, are you?”

Urahara Kisuke shakes his head to dispel daydreams, having slipped off into his own mind there for a few minutes. “And to what do I owe this esteemed honor of partaking in your company?”

A hearty laugh slips out and onto the air all too easily, showing off that blatant amusement for the new captain. “Not much, not much. Just here to see what the new kid on the block thinks of his brand new spanking view!”

“Sir?”

Another laugh as a hand clamps down on his shoulder, the older captain of the two taking a seat on the patio-like front area to the Twelfth Division. “You know, your predecessor was quite the woman, but I bet you know all those details, don’t you?” Kisuke glances, noting a certain light to those eyes he’s never seen up close like this before. He doesn’t yet understand why he’s being accosted by so many captains lately. Is he that fascinating? (Well, he doubts he isn’t fascinating on some level.) “People really seem to think highly of you, new kid.”

Kisuke’s muscles restrict unfathomably as he considers the words that are directed at him. He has known of the pressure and responsibility captains undertake when they finally acquire their positions, but this pressure, he’s starting to find, is getting ridiculous. ‘Think highly of’ - now there is a set-up for failure if ever he saw such a thing. “I have no idea what you’re talking about. Please, enlighten the ‘new kid’.” The traces of sarcasm couldn’t have been dissipated if he had even really tried to do so (but that doesn’t matter, because he wants this captain to take him more seriously, wants that sarcasm to hit home).

“Well, hey! You have to be liked somewhere to have worked your way up the lines enough to have caught the eye of countless people!” Kisuke’s side is nudged in a playfully manner and it hurts more than he would have expected, the person - this captain - obviously not knowing his own strength. “So, kid, if you ever need any help … just know your fellow captains have your back, clear?”

A blond head nods in subdued agreement. “Yes, sir. As you say, sir.” In response, he’s thumped hard on the back.

“Drop those ‘sirs’, kid! We’re equals now, aren’t we?”

“Yes -” He hesitates, almost trained by now to properly address his superiors. The training having been needed, too. Kisuke often would lose face in front of those with so-called ‘power’ in his beginner days, subtle slips of the tongue even adding to his list of most embarrassing moments. “Yes, I quite agree.” Breaking the habit of adding on those courtesy bits would take a while, surely, but he also knows habits are the mind being set in its ways - and he hopes to change those ways, one by one by one. But even as things change, people change, and life changes … that sunrise will always be the same.
